The following info Came from Dogzonline, GOODLUCK
Roll Over
Uses - Handy at the vets, when you need to look at the dogs tummy, great show off trick,
Equipment - food
Method -
Dog is taught off lead in distraction free area. Reason for off lead, if frees up both hands, and trick looks better off lead, saves you having to phase out the lead later.
Dog is in drop position. (lying down)
Gets some food and slowly move food from the dogs nose, towards his hips, his head should start following his nose, and his body should follow. You need to be on your hands and knees to do this.
Once his head is near his hips, move your hand towards the ground and lure him into a full roll.
Once he has done this a couple of times, add the word, "roll over".
The dog might get a bit confused and only go part of the way. Just keep practicing and keep the sessions short. Keep it happy and fun.
Gradually phase out the food reward, so the dog only gets the reward once he has completed the roll.
ADVANCED
Try multiple rolls, rolls in either direction. You can add the word "bang" and give the hand signal with thumb and fore finger pointing at him. If you have two dogs, see if you can get them both rolling in the same direction.
PITFALLS
I got a bit carried away with this trick with one of my dogs. Everytime I said, drop the dog anticipated and rolled over every time. So when the dog has the idea, you might just do some simple drops with out the roll over.
DROP
If your dog does not know drop, might be handy to teach this first. Just get down on hands and knees and slowly lure the dog down with the food and say drop. Dog can be either in sit or stand position. Then phase out the food. |

zaphod is the king of the rollover so naturally marvin has to learn. i teach rollover similarly to what was posted however i do it a bit differently. first most dogs have a more comfortable side to lean on a hip this should be your first direction to teach. from a drop (or down) if resting on their left hip i would kneel in front and with a treat in my right hand reach over their shoulders and lure their head back and over their shoulders into a roll.
i always start on carpet (and so far marvin will only roll over on carpet) and depending on the confidence of the dog i treat a different intervals. if putting the head back is as far as i get at first i treat there. if the dog gets more comfortable but doesn't quite get it i sometimes help at the end.
the hand signal progresses to a spiral in the direction you want them to roll. in newbies from the nose, over head, to floor and back to the nose.
if zaphod wants a treat but doesn't know what you want he will roll and roll and roll to try to impress you.
we are working on the treat on the nose however he's not coordinated enough yet to catch it every time. i started with off/take it and wait commands. then when he understood i would tell him get him to rest his chin level on my palm and ask him to wait. with the other hand i would tell him off and place the treat on his nose then say take it. i didn't care if he caught it at the beginning. as he got better i removed my palm from steadying his head. its really cute since he almost goes cross-eyed trying to keep his eyes on the treat.
kisses can be taught by putting peanut butter (or your dogs favorite) on your hand and saying kiss as they lick it off.
tricks are just about being creative and rewarding what you want. also you can put a command on anything you dog does naturally by saying the word when you catch them doing it. my family had a terrible barker until my mom taught him speak and quiet. the number one thing to remember is timing is key! |

Lola rolled over very well - you could shoot her and she would flop over on her back too. Zoe wont roll over for love or money. I think Riley will learn roll over quickly - like Lola, she enjoys playing on her back.
I would teach them to drop when you shoot them - just make a gun noise and say bang... i usually start this when they are down, i just want them to flop to the side. Some people are able to get their dog to slowly "die" after you shoot them. Not sure how. Its a fun one. Works well for cleaning feet when they come in from outside.
Also, from down, I taught Zoe to crawl... I have her sit, then to down using a treat to get her to slowly slide forward and down, then crawl by pulling the treat away from her so she follows it. |
