I gave up on stuffed toys as well. Atlas can de-stuff and destroy anything in seconds flat - even the ones that are marketed as indestructible. His toy box was full of tiny pieces of toys so it seemed a waste of money. The only toy he seems to keep - this started last Christmas - is those stuffed AKC squirrel toys. He sucks on it while he's waiting for me to finish dinner, etc. (much like he nursed on a pillow when I first got him). It's very endearing .. So now I replace his squirrel once or twice a year.

They like wrapping paper too - buy it on clearance and ball pieces up... nearly free. And the cat may be $10, but thats about what its worth, maybe less.

I keep a painfully accurate budget. In the past 27 months we have spent $12,000+ on our dogs.

This includes every last toy, vet visit, bag of food, dog bed, dishes, leashes, drugs, Lola's sickness and everything associated with having her creamated, etc, and buying Riley and getting her through all of her shots...
Today's $75 worth of fecal exams and drugs are not included here.

Yikes! I would need $12 000 worth of Prozac if that was me! (And a weim-lovin' sugar daddy)! You have my sympathy & admiration. It's not easy with a sick dog. Mine are just garden variety illnesses & injury, nothing exotic. I do know someone who spent $9000+ in vet bills on their weim in 2007.

Chris,

You are my hero....I would go the poor house for my dogs...thank God it hasn't come to that. Jake's surgery was $4,000...the insurance should cover almost half...a small price to pay for my sanity. The way I see it, it's just another bill. I hate to admit this as I love John, but he is very materialistic...he worries way too much about "things". He stresses over the carpets and the furniture and that Scout marks on the doors....to me, the carpets and the furniture and the doors and whatever else can be replaced; I will only have these dogs for too short a time. Besides, if things are so important; then don't have dogs...or kids for that matter...lol

Just to clarify, my comment was meant for the "painfully accurate budget" remark. I just thought that was funny---my husband doesnt' even know what our checkbook looks like Confused , let alone how much money is spent.

Its only when you count it that you realize how much goes where, and then you can decide if its ok, or if you need to adjust your lifestyle a bit.
Lola's illness had a pretty big impact on that total.
I would guess around $4,000 on her and getting Riley up and going.
Food alone is $50-60 a month? 12 months - $600-700 a year - say $1500-1700 of the total - so that is about half of the money already accounted for. Add in heartworm and flea meds...
I imagine you all have spent more than you even realize... you just arent crazy in the head... so you dont know.
In the past week - $70 at the vet, $30 for a dog sitter while at a wedding.

Laughing I STILL haven't been able to choose one! I just can't make my mind up! I want to get one that isn't too 'light' in color, since Luna is kind of a messy little girl!
