Barkaraner.

Okay, this has finally come to a point where I do not know what to do anymore... Confused

Luna barks...
-people she knows (grandmas, our roommate, etc.) I am pretty sure that she does this before she reckognizes who it is.
-people outside the truck. At stoplights or in motion. This can be a person in another car, but she really goes nuts for pedestrians. She does it more when it's just her and I in the truck, I think it's a warning. (how can you get mad at your great protector?)
-inadimate objects. The neighbor's bush, a big glowing plastic santa. (now this is just plain funny...)

Those are all fairly understandable, but tonight she went BEZERK at the neighbor who lives kitty-corner to us. They got their 2 little girls each a puppy for christmas (hooray 2 christmas puppies... don't get me started) - the mom I think was outside with the pups and she ran to the corner of the fence and started barking MANIACALLY. I think she scared the he@# out of the neighbor, and I could NOT get her to stop! I yelled and SSHT-ed and LUNA NO, LUNA COME, LUNA LETS GO IN THE HOUSE, even a LUNA WHAT'S MOM GOT (which works 100% of the time, she always believes that we have something for her) I finally had to stomp through the knee deep snow and puppy-landmines to go put the leash on her and drag her back to the patio..... it's like she was under some sort of spell.

Barking for no reason is a behaivor that is completely unacceptable to me... and I am at a loss as to how to fix this, short of a "remote training collar"

It HAS to stop... Sad

It is so frustrating because besides this she is such a smart and good girl...

Oh my trainer used a citronella collar on a dog in class that barked. She said you don't want them to think it's ok to bark at everything so you may want to work on that. The collar worked great.

My instrustor reccomended getting a little squeeze bottle of lemon juice and squirting a drop in their mouth when they bark. I don't have that problem, so I don't know, but it's worth a try and safe.

squirt bottle works every time on my guys. I always give the command first..ONE time. If they don't listen, they get a squirt.

Although these are all good ideas, worthy of trying when we're in the house, I don't know how well they would work in other situations... we have a very big back yard so when we're standing by the door and she's in the corner going nuts, a little squirt gun or lemon juice won't do the trick.... although if it weren't so cold the garden hose might Twisted Evil

Also in the truck when I'm driving... these dogs! Rolling Eyes

haha..I've used the garden hose before too. We got waterguns so we can carry them around and use them when we need to. When you're out, the citronella collar sounds like a good idea to me. I, personally, don't like to use the bark collars. I have one for my female JRT who is a MAJOR barker, but she's real sensitive, and now all I have to do is show it to her or even tell her I'm getting it. Also, it has a vibration warning before it shocks, and I've only ever had to use the vibration on her....the weims are just a lot trickier in my opinion with negative stuff. I like the squirt bottle because they don't associate it with you (if you can manage to not let them see you with it Wink

)

I used the lemon juice squirt bottle (the little yellow lemon-shaped one) on my old dog and it worked wonders! You have to give them a command when you squirt them-say "quiet" firmly when you squirt. Then they learn what the word means and eventually you don't need the bottle. After a while my dog (Clifford) would only have to see the bottle and he'd turn away and look guilty! But they can definitely learn what "quiet" means...

Luckily my Gracie doesn't bark much at all so I haven't needed to try it on her.

Mindy,

OMG..I want to see what suggestions you get. I have 4 that will bark like lunatics as we get to a destination. Scout starts it and the others join in. I don't know how he knows we are where we are going,but he does and just before we arrive the barking starts.

Kam barks too. It's especially annoying when it's something totally ridiculous (like a leaf blowing down the sidewalk on the OTHER side of the street Rolling Eyes

)! I've been doing the "QUIET" command and then physically moving him onto something else.

I've found the squirt bottle to be more of a pain, because I can never seem to find it!!!

My trainer also used breath spray right in the dogs mouth, he hated it. I don't know if I'd let her do that to my dog though. Don't know if the stuff in breath spray is bad for them.

I wouldn't think the stuff in the breath spray is bad, but it DOES have alchohol in it, which can certainly burn the crap outta their eyes...
But I bet mine would have the freshest breath in the world!
I had a friend when I was a teenager that used to spray bitter apple IN her dog's mouth. I flipped out on her about that one. He used to foam and spit and everything. Very cruel!

I said that... "that doggie must have fresh breath". She only had to do it once to the "barker" made sure it was directly in his mouth, and he didn't bark for the rest of the class.
