I just have to tell you guys this. I am so PROUD of Duchess. I am always proud of her, but today...
Anyway, This morning one of my 14 year old sons ( I have twins) went deer hunting. He came running in the house, yelling Mama I got a deer (only his 2nd one) I need help getting it out. He grabs his brother and about 15 minutes later, brother comes back in and yells I need a weim. I said try Duchess and Beau, he runs out the door with both dogs, they get out int he woods and Beau wants to pee on everything, so my 16 year old returns with Beau. He says mama, Duchess is on that deer!!! I was so excited...
The twins come back explaining how "DUCHESS FOUND THE DEER"...over and over.
When they bring the deer in, they tell me how she put her nose to the ground and went thru brush, bush and briar's, got to the deer and stopped at a point!!! I was so proud of my couch potato girl!!! The boys said they could never have found the buck without Duchess. I am so proud of her and amazed that she performed so well. She has NEVER had any formal training at all. She is just my oh so special girl. She loves all children, protects us if necessary , gives the best hugs and kisses and now she is a deer hunter too.
I know ya'll that hunt are probably thinking I am nuts. But, I just had to tell someone. I have called everybody that I can think of to tell them. Ya'll better be glad I don't have your phone numbers!!! LOL
I would post pictures (I took a few ) But, the dad blasted card reader thing went nuts....
Anyway, I am finished bragging, but I am still over flowing with excitment!!! YAY DUCHESS!!! |

Congrats on your sons deer, HOWEVER....UNDERLINE IN BRIGHT RED!!!! Be careful who you tell that story to, Here in NY as well as most states it is strictly forbidden for a private citizen to take a dog afield in search of wounded game.
I know this as I arrowed a very large buck during bow season and had to get in touch with NYS deer search to track it down(we never found the deer btw). Talking with the dog handler I found all this out, You need a license and to be certified in ny sate, PA doesn't even allow dogs to be used in any way, shape, or form for recovery.
Not to put to much of a damper on things...Congrats again.
If you live in NY state I have all the info on how to get started to become a certified recovery dog handler, We always can use more volunteers. Sounds like you could be one of the most popular people in your area if your intrested. |

I live in Georgia. But, I would love to do something like that with her.
We are so far out in the boonies, when I tell most people here that I have a weim, they ask me what "it" is.
My son shot the deer on our property. He does not even have to have a license to hunt on our property (he is under 16).
Here in Georgia, as far as we know, you can use dogs to track a deer, hunt hogs, etc...Alot of people do that here.
Where would we go or who would we ask to find out if this is legal or not??!!
Where would I find info on being a certified recovery handler in this state? Or if we even have that.
A friend of ours is from Fla and they use dogs to HUNT deer as well as in Alabama.
Thanks for the info and I am still proud!!! |

Congrats...my husband loves that story. We are in PA and here is not legal to use dogs at all in hunting game...he just told me that here they shoot wild dogs and packs looking to hunt...
We would love to have our own property to hunt. We live in a suburban area and my husband shot a deer behind our house first day of bow season last year. He had to track it onto a neighbors property. Of course, she saw him and freaked out, followed him onto our property screaming at him the whole way. It was a perfectly legal deer but he won't be doing that again.
I am glad your boys have that opportunity...and what a good dog!!!!!

Thanks for the info about the game commission.
We are truly blessed (I think) to be able to live out like we do so that the kids can have the oppurtunities and experiences that they have had and will have.
Duchess is the STUFF today! We even called my husband and he said, she's my dog!!! Yeah right!!

AH HA! Your from way down south....Don't take my word for it butttt....I think in your state you can hunt(deer) with dogs.
Contact your states dept of natural resources for info on becoming a recovery handler. Wiems are some of the best for it, AND its a great way to meet good people and make good friends. I'm going to start my Steele on training this next spring and summer.
Again....coming from a life long hunter and outdoors man, Congrats on your boys deer. Keep em hunting. If you teach a kid to hunt, You'll never have to hunt for the kid. |

I will definitely contact them on Monday morning. I would love to do things like that with her.
My boys LOVE to hunt. Especially the one that was hunting this morning. He goes out every chance he gets. The statement about never having to "hunt for the kid"... I believe you!! That is one reason that we worked so hard to get this piece of property. So, that the kids could learn and be "free". Not cooped up in the city and getting into things that they shouldn't. My husband grew up in the city, I...in the country. I won out and we are both SO glad.
Thanks for the conrats... I have told my son that everyone said congratulations and he grins from ear to ear!! It makes him feel good. Me too.
Hey when your son can hunt and your dog can track...what could be better!!!??? |
