Sooo... I've read a lot about all the diets that your dogs are on. I've been feeding my dog Kirkland adult food and NuVet plus vitamens since I bought her. I was told that was what i should/have to feed her in order to keep the "health contract" I signed with the breeder. I'm guessing maybe the breeder suggested it because it is resonably priced... IDK.
I'm not sure the health contract really matters though... its not like I would ever returen her no matter how sick she got... but I see a lot of you (for lack of a better term) snuff your noses at Kirkland. Is it really that bad? I think my dog looks great... but is it something I should consider switching?
Just curious about what you guys think... and I'm bored. I'm off work until Jan 7th.  |

My opinion... if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Seriously, if you dog likes it and is healthy (firm stools, nice coat, etc) and happy, and you're happy with the price and ingredients leave it be!
Who cares what other people think! We did alot of messing around trying to find the 'right' food for Luna because she had GI issues and a very sensitive tummy... we stopped at Canidae and have just let it alone, becuase it's working! |

| I personally prefer higher protein food, if grain is present, only one source of it. In my own research I found some conflicting evidence about certain additives like ferrous sulfate and, zinc, copper, etc. Its consideres safe in small ammounts but in large often caused health problems in lab animals. So to be on a safe side, I feed mine diet with least synthetic additives. |

I feed all my dogs Canidae. However when i took Luke to the vet last, Dr. Stewart wasn't thrilled about it. Doc said that their is no way that one food can be right for all stages or life, small and larges breeds. He told me that i needed to have Luke on something for large breed. Something about their joints and keeping him Lean. I don't know  I thought about feeding them something else but they like Canidae. Plus they're all healthy, firm poops. What do you guys think about what the vet said? Has anyone else got similar feedback? |

I don't agree with that. What about for those feeding RAW? They can be on that as early as when weaned all the way thru senior-hood. I don't think that one type of food is right for ALL dogs, however. IMO, most vets back their suppliers (just like some doctors). It's a business, unfortunately.
Stick with what works... |

| Oh, yeah, and another thing...nutrtion is one of those subjects that everyone has to agree to disagree. Every dog is different and what's great for one might not work at all for another. I noticed in several comments made throughout some food discussions, the price of Canidae is always mentioned. I think that most of us here are feeding this because it works for the animal, regardless of price. To me, the inexpensive cost is just an added bonus! |

| It does seem like a sensitive subjec. I was just curious if it really made a huge difference in the health of the dog. My dog seems perfectly healthy on my cheap costco food... but I would pay more if it was necessary. |

| It is sensitive...not really sure why. I guess everyone wants to feed their pet the absolute best, but that's not always the same product as someone else feeds (and feels is the best). My feeling is, I really don't care what anyone else feeds, as long as it works in all aspects (nutritionally, convenience, cost, preparations, etc.). Just don't criticize me or anyone else because of our choice! |

I've seen worse that Kirkland's food. For the price, it's not that bad.
I do think food makes a big difference in the health of a dog though, just like with people.
It's been proven in people that what mothers eat while pregnant can affect the genes of their offspring. Actually the epigenome not the genes themselves. There was a great NOVA show on epigenetics recently that was very easy to digest and they showed a study on the effects of diet and future generation health. They looked at farming records and health records and showed that there was a strong correlation between what grandparents ate and the health of the grandchildren.
