We keep wanting to start with the bell, but I've read that you were supposed to start when they are 100% potty trained... which every time we think we're there, she reminds us otherwise.
Maybe it's time to get baby-bonehead a bell and see how it goes. |

| I had never heard that, although it may be true. I used it as a tool to help her let me know when to go out. She picked it up at at two and a half months after about 48-72 hours. She has used it ever since. |

| My kids would have a field day with a bell at their height. |

Sorry - I don't have any advice for you ... I was expecting Linkin to go through what you're going through with Luna, but so far he's doing okay.
He probably goes outside half as much now than he did when it was warmer out. Lately he will tell us he has to go out and then refuse to actually go out the door. I'm not sure if he actually has "to go" or if he just wants to go outside and play until he actually feels the cold air on his face.
At first I would force him to go out, but he would stay and bark at the door. Then I would go outside with him, but neither of us wanted to be outside so I have stopped forcing him (you know how COLD it has been in MN lately). Now I wait until he is really giving me "the look" while he's sitting at the door. I decided that as long as he's not peeing in the house he can hold it as long as he wants! So far he hasn't had an accident... But most of the time he pees on the deck! Poor little guy. He HATES this weather! I know that I should be making him leave the deck, but he only does it when it's really cold, and I don't want to be out there either. |

We do the bell method with Reagan and have started with Maggie. Reagan picked it up quickly and even though she wasn't 100% potty trained she knew exactly when to go to the bell. She still had accidents (mostly SA related when we would dare leave the room without her!) but now even in the new house she goes right to the door and hits the bell. It is worth a try.
I will say that I received advice as well to not try that until they have connected pottying to outside but IMO they pick that up fairly quickly...it is just keeping it consistent.
Good luck |

Cooper does the bell, but he had associated with attention to his needs. If he saw the bunny out the window, he ran to the the back door & pounded the h3ll out of the bell. If we were late with supper, he'd start ringing it quietly at first, then with ever more frequency and energy.
That ticked me off one day so I ripped it off the door & chucked it on the table, then back to what I was doing. A minute later he brought it to me, rang it, dropped it on my feet & stalked away. Right back at you mommy!
I'm not quite sure who won that battle of immaturity...but he started it! |

We put a bell out right away, probably when Otto was 10 weeks. Every time we took him out, we made his paw touch it. We were absoloutely amazed at how quickly he responded. 6 months later, that's how he tells us he has to go. It is nice because we can hear him wherever we are in the house.
I highly recommend! |

The other night Scout lifted his leg and PEED on the wicker basket we keep in our kitchen for plastic bags..not a mark sprinkle..he peed...right in front of John. OMG, I thought John was going to kill him. He got even madder when Scout got under the table and John couldn't get him...
I heard all this and ran in, grabbed Scout by his scruff and into the crate he went until midnight.
Scout will be 5 in February.......He is fully housebroken. What the h3ll gets into these dogs?????? |
