Hello everyone. Well I have a mouthful to say and I hope I can get at least 1 fellow Weim owner to sympathize with me. My little furry friend, Bouley, has just turned 1 year old, and he’s such a handful, mentally and physically. Since the beginning when we picked him up in Georgia, it’s been one problem after another, but somehow his cute little face wins me over. I always say that God made Weims so cute because they are sooooo bad. Ok here goes with my ranting. After we got him neutered at 6 months, he got a real bad urinary tract infection that inhibited him from holding his pee. We would dribble, not a full stream, all over the house for almost 1 month!!!! Arg!!! Then it was the chewing. He’s destroyed shoes, a pair of reading glasses, more shoes, furniture, rugs, my CELL PHONE, his own crate, he just amazes me. For anyone with a crate that was purchased from Petsmart, that thick, black plastic tray at the bottom of the crate, well that was into 1000s of tinny pieces within hours. Anything that is left in his crate when we leave him will be pulverized, nothing can withstand his wrath!! He’s just crazy!!! I started him as my running and hiking partner when he was 5-6 months old. He’s getting better outside with me, but I have to have 3 lungs when we run, 2 for me, and 1 for correcting his behavior. He gets plenty of exercise so I’m just not sure what exactly is going on, or if this breed is just like this. He’s just 1 year old, and hasn’t hit 50 pounds yet!! He used to eat 3 meals a day, but has now reduced that to 1-2 meals per day. His bowl is always full, but he just doesn’t eat.
I just need someone to tell me that this is normal, that this breed is hyper, crazy, spazy, but this behavior will pass, they will one day turn into good doggies. I think I expect too much from Bouley because my first dog, a mutt, is soooooooooooo smart, easy to take of, self sufficient and just the best dog ever. The mutt, Macey, knows over 50 commands, and learns tricks on just a few tries. He amazing, and then there’s Bouley, the Weim that just won’t leave me alone, always following me, sleeping on my legs at night, no matter how many times we tell him to get down off the bed. But when I’m away from Bouley I constantly think about him, I try to figure out his behavior, but I come up with question marks. So that was fun talking about my silly Weim, can anyone comfort me with encouraging words? I could really use them. Thanks for your time.

How much research did you do on this breed before purchasing???
Sounds typical, with some good training, not just exercise, but REAL (professional) training, he should be under control. Chewing is normal, stop leaving stuff around. All of our shoes stay IN the closet, cell phones up out of reach, gate in front of the x-mas tree.

That sounds about right. We have all been through the same stuff. Definitely get him into some classes and you will see that he is really smart. They just have a hard time paying attention because they are so hyper.
Get him some bones and kongs and toy like that. No matter how many times I vacuum I still find pillow stuffing all over my house. Also chewing can be from boredom so make sure he gets some exercise every day.
I've been told they calm down around 2, but my girl is still a pup too, but she is getting better every day.

What kind of food does he eat? I've noticed that if I give my weim IAMS, she's a nut case, but when I stick to Canidae and her digestive tract is happy, I get a much easier to handle dog.

YOU CAN DO IT Very Happy

Puppies are tough to handle no matter what breed they are. I have a two year old dachshund that's very smart but anything she can get her paws on goes in her mouth. The first thing i did after we got her was puppy proof our house. When she is not in her pin she is watched by either myself or my husband. Be patient with him and really work with him on training. Don't worry everyone who has ever had a puppy has been frustrated at one point or another. Very Happy

Sounds like a typical weim puppy. You can do it. You have to keep things out of his reach...that's just normal.

Wow, thanks for all the replies, I'm so happy to hear from people with the same issues, haha. It's funny because we actually do put everything up and away from him and he still somehow finds all our important belongings and chews them. He escapes from his cage all the time. We have it rigged with all kinds of carabiners and plywood just to keep him in. I'm laughing just thinking about it because he does some amazing things in his cage. I won't give up on him, I know he's smart, almost too smart, and I can't wait till I can harness his potential and use it for good!!!!

Defiantly get him in some classes, a trainer teaches YOU how to teach your dog. My trainer says dogs are not creatures that think evil thoughts on how to torture us, the bad behavior comes from them wanting to be close to humans and from complete boredom or curiosity. You have to learn how to eliminate those things. If you dont learn how to deal with him he will get on your nerves to the point that you want to give up and that is how all those dogs end up in the pound or the rescue shelters. This breed as I am still learning is very hyper and has lots of energy so you (I) have to figure out how to let him burn off some of it

wait, if figured it out. i had a treat in my cargo pocket... she just crushed it in there! ha.
anyway.
velcro, crazy energy, must sleep ON you, etc etc.
i think you may want to go back and teach him to WALK on a leash before you teach him to run.

the craziness does go away at some point... zoe has good quiet days (she is 3.5) and other days, she is just as nuts as a puppy.

speaking of puppy, she is back getting into trouble... gotta run!
