So my mothers 4 month old weim Bonnie recently got her first rabies shot and soon after developed a hard "tumor-like" thing on her hip. One of my mothers friends sais her lab died of somthing called injection site sarcoma ( which I have read is rare in dogs, more common in cats). Obviously mom freaked out and took her back to the vet who said she had never seen a case of it and that perhaps the weim breed is just sensitive to the vaccine and the growth is probably just an infection or irritation. Butler hasnt gotten his rabies shot yet and now I'm honestly a little worried. Do you think my mom should get a second opinion on Bonnie? Has anyone else had these type of bumps after injections???

Scout always gets a lump at the site of his rabies shot. It stays for a while and goes away on it's own.

the lump is a common reaction to the rabies vaccine in all dog breeds. it normally goes away in 4-8 weeks but should be brought to the vets attention if it remains longer or begins getting larger. you're correct that injection site sarcoma is much more common in cats as a reaction to rabies or feline leukemia however it is also rare in cats.

KD just received her rabies injection last week....she has a small lump, too...we called the vet and they said warm compresses or children's benedryl...but this lump is already 1.5 weeks old...so the compresses or meds won't work...I hope this little knot will disappear, the vet says 3 to 4 weeks...we are a little concerned.
