can anyone reccomend good general training books? I'm busy with school and dont have a lot of time to work with uno and he's been acting out lately, running away, barking at people, nipping me, roughhousing, etc.
I've seen few ceasar episodes on tv and though of buying his books, but I dont know.

A lot of dogs will run away, and some just have that drive. And what do you mean barking at people? My lab will bark at people to "talk" to them, he'll make different noises and look you right in the eye while being submissive. But, when people approach the house he acts as a guard dog, barking, fur standing up on his neck, but he'd only ever lick them to death.
Nipping at you is absolutely not acceptable behavior, I'd start with that. And I believe that all dogs need some time rough housing, it's their instinct to play like that like they do in a pack.

How old is Uno?

I've read several posts here that advise reading "The Culture Clash" by Jean Donaldson (I think that's the name).

Maybe he's just going through a phase???

This has been recommended to me over and over and over so I finally gave in and picked it up:

http://www.amazon.com/101-Dog-Tricks-Activities-Challenge/dp/1592533256/ref=pd_bbs_sr_5_s9_rk/102-1479832-6768145?ie=UTF8&s=books&s9r=8a1080b61145d8720111a0b1adc00c7b&itemPosition=5&qid=1194615832&sr=8-5

Very easy to read and even easier to understand. The way things are laid out and described (with photos!) is perfect.

Given the success of the star dog here, I'd say the methodology is probably pretty sound.

Culture Clash is a must read for every dog owner as far as I'm concerned....
I've only seen exerpts of Kyra's books, but I see those 2 in person from time to time so... Smile

Other books on the list I give to puppy people include anything by Ian Dunbar, Suzanne Clothier... I thought Caesar's Way was pretty good as well as the Monks of New Skete books. There are lots of good stuff on the internet as well. Shirley Chong's keeper pages are full of good stuff for instance http://www.shirleychong.com/keepers/retrieve.html

its sort of an annoying bark, we live in a quiet neighborhood and have a lake next to our house, so I let him off the leash to run around and stretch the legs, I try to make sure theres nobody walking around, because he'll chase after the person and bark at them. I feel like he thinks the lake is his property and he's protecting it. He never barks at people at a dog park. I've tried teaching him to come to me, but he wont listen, so I need tips for that. But he always listens to my dad because he's very strict with him, I on the other hand have a very soft voice and its difficult for me to really project it.

I'll definitely check out the books, thanks.

kam- hes 16 months, I got him at 6 months and he was quite unruly before, the previous owners didnt do much with him, and I think I spoiled him a bit and he doesent have a lof of respect for me.

He needs to learn that you're his boss. Kam KNOWS who's boss in this house (me Very Happy )!!! And I spoil him, let him on furniture, sleeps in our bed, pretty much does whatever BUT within MY guidelines. He knows that he needs to go through me to get anything. In all honestly, I only outweigh Kam by about 20lbs, and he has much more power than I, but I am very stern with him. Sometimes I don't even have to say a word, just hands on my hips and "the look" and he goes running with his head down right into his crate! I'm still working on some issues with Kam, but we're getting there and there is a drastic improvement since August, when we got him. It takes awhile, and as long as you EXPECT him to behave a certain way, it'll come because you'll continue to keep working with him. But the first thing you need to do is teach him that YOU are the boss!
