i have a new 9wk old weimaraner puppy named Samus. we are in the process of potty training but i live in an apartment. the problem is that you have to go down stairs to get outside to the potty area. little Samus needs to take her time to get down the stairs, but in the process pottys (#1) on some step on the way. i don't want to carry her down but i also need her to potty in the grass. any ideas on what to do ?

You have to carry her down. She won't make it otherwise. When she is bigger and a little older she will be able to get down faster and hold it while she gets there.

We have to go down our basement steps to get to our back yard. Gunnar was 12 weeks old before he mastered the stairs.

Welcome to the site! Good luck with your new girl!

You may want to carry her until she is a little older. I had to carry my girl, just out the back door at times. It's better than cleaning up pee pee all the time.

At 9wks, IMO, it's alot to expect the pup to do all those stairs when she has to go. I'd carry her, or let her do some, so she gets the hint, then carry her down the rest, and make it a point to help her get to the grass.

I potty trained Pixy while on a 3 week road trip. I carried from the hotel room outside. The hotel staff thought she was some kind of princess or something, little did they know I was trying to save their carpet!

I had to carry Marley in the middle of the night, and it was just down the hall. I lost count of how many times she ended up going on me before I could get her to the door. The most important thing is for Samus to know that she is supposed to go in the grass, but I am going to assume she doesn't get that far sometimes.

As I learned with obedience training, 'Don't set your dog up to fail'. She's still just a baby, and it's okay to treat her like one. It won't be long before she'll be waiting for you at the door.

Congratulations on the pup and good luck.

I still carry daisy outside in the middle of the night. That's the only time she has to maneuver the stairs, but I would rather carry her down quickly than have her pee on my stairs, or get distracted. You know, even as an adult, it's hard to have to hold it sometimes, she's little, enjoy it while it lasts. Someday you'll wonder where the time went, and wish you could still pick her up and cuddle her.

Carry her belly up and she likely won't pee on you.... likely won't.

Just move fast!
