| I have an 8 month old female Weim. I got her when she was 2 months old and she has had ongoing health problems. Ear infections, high fevers, high white blood count, high liver levels, anorexia (when she has an episode) legarthy. All the symptoms point toward Immunodeficiency Syndrome. But they still haven't pinpointed the problem. She has been on antibiotics almost the whole time I've had her. Going back to the vet for the 10th time for more blood work. Vet won't give me a definate answer as to whats wrong. When she's healthy she is a joy to be around and I love her with all my heart. But when she has her episodes it's like a totally different animal. I feel so sorry for her. I wish i could either get her well or get whatever she has under control. I'm on a limited income so I can't keep affording these expensive trips to the vet once to twice a month. Some one plese help. Thank you |

I would go to a holistic vet. They don't just address symptoms which is what most traditional vets do which is why with immune system problems they just keep recurring and recurring and recurring. Covering up the symptoms does not address the problem. She needs to be healed from the inside out.
Join the holistic weim list at www.weim.net/mailing.htm, it's low volume but you'll get lots of advice there.
I would start by changing her diet, diet is the cornerstone of good health. I would also start boosting her immune system. You may need the meds to control her symptoms while you are working on her health and it will be a process but not impossible. |

Wow, it's been going on for 6 months and the vet still hasn't found anything??? Have you gotten a 2nd opinion?
I'm sure you'll get some good advice here.
Good luck. |

I'm not surprised. As I've said in the past, vets are generalists not breed specialists. Also most are trained to just "cure" symptoms (which is why so many dogs are on multiple rounds of AB's and things keep recurring) rather than addressed the underlying problem. It's partially clients too, I think most people feel better with an easy "fix" and giving a pill. Not that that is bad, by all means I think it's good to ease symptoms so the dog is not suffering but by not addressing the underlying issue things like this keep coming back over and over and over again. Going to a holistic vet or one that has worked with a lot of Weims or other purebred dogs where immune system issues are a common problem would be the way to go IMO. |

I just don't get that...doctors don't continually prescribe AB's because of the possible tolerance that can build for them, so why do vets do that for dogs??? I don't know, I always question the "pill pushers". |

| Thank You all so much for your feedback. The vet I'm taking her to now is the second one. And as far as I know we don't have a holistic vet in our area. I have however been giving her a vitamin supplement called dinovite. I will try anything to get her well. Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |
