We currently live in Sicily Italy where we've rescued Ana!! She has tested positive for Leish which is a common disease for Europe and the Middle east. It is transmitted primarily from the female sand fly and in most cases can be deadly. Because of our nationality circumstances we have very strict rules about our pets especially since we will be returning to the states. The standard process for a leish positive canine is to have them put to sleep. THANKFULLY, after requesting a second blood test, Ana is only a carrier and not contagious. We feel like our Vet has taken the proper precautions with Ana knowing that Leish "can" be transmitted to other pets and in rare cases to humans if not treated properly.
Knowing that this forum is mostly state side people and that most state side folks have never heard of this disease let alone dealt with it, I'm still curious if anyone has further information. Everything I've gleaned from the Internet is contradicting to say the least and its obviously a very serious situation if its transmittable.
Thanks in advance for your help!!! |
