My Weim loves tracking & picked it up easy which amazed me & my partner, she started when she was 4 months old & is now 7 months old.
She has just passed track: level 1
in a closed club trial.
Here is a pic attached of my partner & Busta girl hard at work in a pine plantation where they do tracking on the w/end.
It looks so natural for them to have their nose on the ground on a trail.

Well RK,
From what I have learnt so far by taking Busta Tracking is that they have to put there nose to the ground when they smell a scent & try & follow it while someone holds a 20 foot lead attached to a harness that goes around the Weims belly.
The Weim is suppose to pull in that direction with the nose on the ground with the human following & helping the dog by stopping if the dog is going of track.
At the start of a track a human will go & drop an article with there scent on it at the first flag that has been put in the ground then walk straight or in a bend or angle & hide behind a tree. Then the dog is told to scent the article (this only takes a second for them to do) incredible!
Then they are off to find the human, at the end when the person is found, the dog is rewarded with treats or/& a play with there toy.
I went about doing it by just doing a search on the internet for places near me & contacting the K9 association of my state.
It cost us $40 Australian dollars for a year, & we meet up every week end in the morning at 7am to 11am in a pine plantation to do it.
Hope this answers ur question |

| I've heard another good way to teach a young pup to follow a scent is to put a small treat in each footstep you make. This path leads to the jackpot of treats or something like that. I was looking into to doing this with Scout, but am concentrating on obedience for now. There's a lot of info on the internet about it. I'm not sure if you compete in tracking competitions in the US that you actually find a person. I think it may be an object or something. But I could be wrong! It's really amazing on how they can find things. Scout does a lot of air scenting. It's really amazing to watch when something catches their interest. We have deer and coyotes in the woods behind our house and Scout always paces at the edge of the woods, nose to the ground and then to the air. Again, it's pretty neat! |

YEAH!
Busta passed level 2 in her closed Tracking Trial over the last w/end. That means she just has to pass another two closed club trials, then she can go into a real trial. |
