Stormy has been sick. Sad It's been tough since I have been working a midnight shift lately. The vet thinks she has a bladder infection, and put her on antibiotics.

She keeps trying to pee, very little comes out. Sometimes it is bloody! She's been pretty lethargic too. She is also running a slight fever ~103 DEGF.

We're supposed to keep giving her antibiotics and contact the vet if she isn't better by Friday.

I know it is not as bad as what some of you have gone through but I hate to see my baby so down.

Anyone know what causes bladder infections or urinary tract infections? Anyone have experience with this. We're having problems keeping her from eating acorns? Could that be contributing?

What food is she on? Sometimes their food can cause it. It seems to be a more common girl problem than boy problem. And yes, it can make them feel CRUMMY! What antibiotics did the vet put her on? Clavamox? Sometimes clavamox can make them a little nauseous, but keep giving it to her. She's got to take the antibiotics to get better.

My Indy had some bladder infections. I got some cranberry tablets from the health food store to acidify her urine as she would not drink cranberry in her water. Also I wet her food & put some broth in the water to tempt her so I could get more liquid in her to help her pee.

But we did go through some time while she had trouble getting any out.

My Nova had chronic UTI's and bladder infections as a puppy. There are several factors that can lead to them.

1. holding pee for too long
2. she had what was called...well, heck, I cant remember the specific name, something like "indiculi" or "inticuli"...essentially it was a little tiny pocket on her bladder where it didn't form smooth as it was developing. It was such a problem because the bacteria would hide in there so she'd be OK on antibiotics, but as soon as we took her off them, it would come right back. We had her "fixed" a bit early b/c this was one of our guesses as to her problem and I didn't want her on antibioticis forever; during the surgery they just cut a little higher to look at her bladder, found the problem and snipped it off-- much better since.
3. sometimes the vagina is tucked up higher than it should be (this was also the case with Nova). This is a problem because it traps the bacteria. If you let the dog come into heat, it should drop. However, there is also a surgery where they cut some of the skin around the vagina that helps.

I just chose to have her fixed early because we didn't want to breed her anyway and I didn't want to keep her on antibiotics for a year + to see if letting her go into heat was a *potential* fix.

Now, if I notice her getting symptoms I give her cranberry pills and she's good to go. Also, when we were having all the problems, in addition to antiobiotics, we had a tube of cream w a pointed nozzle on it that we would put in her vagina and squeeze medicine in. Sounds nasty, but it helped tremendously.

Thanks for the advice! She eats Canidae. I'll try to get her to drink more water and finish the round of antibiotics. Don't know what kind until I go home. She has already been spayed. I really hope this doesn't become chronic. She really isn't left inside long by herself so I doubt it is from holding it too long, but I'll keep it in mind.

I'll also look into the cranberry tablets. What are the early warning signs?

We had a problem about 6 years ago with our Aussie getting UTI's our vet thought it might be our water supply. Our water had a strong chlorine smell to it. So we started using spring water and no more UTI's so now I buy water by the gallon for my boys.

I just got back from the vet last night too. My 4 1/2 month old baby has a UTI. He had both red and white cells in the urine, but no crystals from the kidneys anyway. He is scheduled to be neutered next week, so the vet put him on antibiotics that will run from now until 3 days after surgery. She says she sees it more often in weim babies, but it doesn't seem to be continuing as they mature. He was running a fever in the late afternoons and having trouble peeing outside and then he peed 3 times in the house- which he had never done, once in his crate on top of his toys with me right there! Poor baby.

PS- He is eating Canidae, but I didn't think I had gotten the new formula yet.

Bailey kept getting recurrent UTI infections that were extremely painful. I started giving her daily cranberry pills and she has had any problem in six months. Good luck!

She's doing so much better. Very Happy I'm going to start giving her filtered water off of the fridge. Thanks for the advice! I hope Singsmom is doing better too.

Oh yes, we are SO much better. When I first got this puppy he was sleeping so much I was worried, but he had worms, coccidia and now we found his UTI. Now that he is healthy, he is full of piss and vinegar! Running around like a puppy should. I too hope that UTI's won't be in our future, but with a boy I would think it is less common to continue past puppyhood?
