Has anyone taught their weims how to close the door once they were finished? Laughing Laughing Laughing

Jack has taught himself how to open our backdoor now, and this is all fine and dandy... but he can't seem to close it!

The other night I was sitting with my son on the couch prepping him for bed, when I hear the back door creek open and in comes Jack. He trotted into our home as though nothing was out of the norm, hopped up on the couch and I just sat there with this baffled look on my face.

We didn't teach him how to open the door, so I'm assuming in true weim fashion he couldn't wait for me to let him in... so he let himself in!

This is great, but now our only problem is he leaves the door open and lets all the bugs in LOL

Any ideas on how to teach a dog to close the door when he/she is finished? Not sure

No suggestions,

But I sometimes wonder if they watch and learn how to do things from us or they do it by accident one time and say, "hey this is pretty cool"

I love this breed

I'm still trying to find a way for mine to close the doors. They can let themselves out, to which we had to install extra hooks on the door that they can't reach. My Gunner knows how to unlock the screen doors. I've seen him unlock the doors with his nose and let himself outside in the front yard:shock: That is a huge NO NO!!!! The back yard is fenced in so I don't mind, it's rather convenient. But now he needs to learn to close it behind him. Too many flies this time of year.

I'm working on a way to teach them to close the door.....Both my dogs LOVE my blue rags, so for now and before the snow falls, the screen door is still on. I've tied the blue rag on the door. With some fun and games, treats and praise, and let's not forget...me crawling around on the floor with a blue rag in my mouth pulling the door shut and looking like a total nut case, I think this may work. But then again, knowing the strength of my Gunner, this may cause the door to come off the hinges I may then have to come up with something different. Rolling Eyes I love training Laughing

Actually i am trying this now.... when my dog comes in I hold a treat up about 5 feet right next to the door... I am getting her to stand up on her hind legs prop on the door with her front legs closing the door and then giving her the treat and praise..... I could only think of this one way to do it.... It actually slams the door but hey, I will hopefully be able to sit my lazy butt on the couch after she is trained... I just started last night so I found it odd to see this post today.

ROFL!! I did something similar getting Winston to ring the bells to go outside! I crawled up to the door, sniffed the bells, pawed them to make them ring, then jumped to my feet saying "GOOD BOY!!!!" and opening the door all excited like. Winston looked at me like I was crazy Embarassed
