not that i want some rough tough bully, but i would like him to not be such a wimp. when around other dogs he is very submissive. if they bark or approach to quickly, he freaks, and bolts. only after a long period does he warm up and start defending/rough housing/playing back. it is sort of embarrassing when a Chihuahua half his size chases him down and rolls him around and all he can do is yelp is butt off. he even runs from people many times.

as long as the other dog is not too rough, i usually let him sort things out for himself. he seems to be getting better. but he still startles very easily.

is it a pup thing or what? i know they are very different breeds, but my rott was never like that.

he is 3 months.

It's not the size of the dog that matters .. How old is the Chi? .. Your pup is still young and he's figuring things out

My pup isn't submissive at all, but he will run frantically from a Shih Tzu PUPPY who isn't much bigger than a mop head!

Loki will get startled and jump back but ends up answering with a bark and walking toward what it was that scared him, still barking. Do you think that it will make him more aggressive when playing with other dogs as he gets older? Will it make him more aggressive toward people that may startle him?

My wimp of a dog (Storm) almost took my knee out last night. I took them both for a walk and we saw this funny looking grey and white animal with a long tail and pointy ears (otherwise know as a kitty cat). Sky was intrigued and wanted to play with it, Storm ran full speed the other way, into my knee. This was the BRAVEST kitty I'm ever seen, it would not back down from my dogs.

Wilson is around 4 years and is a wussy boy around other animals. He is getting better, I try to watch the situation. I keep a close watch on the body language of the other dog and if it does not appear to be aggressive encourage Wilson to investigate. He likes to run sniff their bums when they start to walk away.

I think the wimpiness of Wilson will trigger the bully in other dogs, so I have to make sure nothing happens, but generally leave them alone otherwise. Kinda sad, he is like the geeky kid on the playground with no friends......he wants friends, but doesn't have the social skills to get them. Crying or Very sad

Don't feel bad my boy is the same way! He get spooked easily and hauls butt out of there. He is only 4 months so will see if he gets better. Like others on here though he has no problem knocking me over or barking out the window at everything. I hope he grows out of it too.

My Mercedes is the same way. She was bumped by another dog and yelped so bad you thought she was being killed. She would run from a 3 month old Yorkie. We have gone to a pet store that has a 1 yo. Australian Shepherd and the first time she would not play just kept running. The last time we went( last week) she played, it was a miracle. Very Happy She is now just 4 3/4 months old. I want to see what she does next time. I have been working on this since she was 12 weeks old.

As I said on your other thread:

He's just a baby!! Cut him a little slack! He's been alive approximately 90 days.... things are scary when you're that new to the world. Go to the WCA site and look at the time-line for weims and the socialization schedule, it'll help you to make sure he's well adjusted.

Be sure when he's scared (as long as it's a safe situation, don't put him in a pond of sharks and make him fend for himself) be sure to IGNORE the behavior, don't coddle, don't talk, don't pick him up, don't get upset... just ignore it, act like it's not a big deal. Allow him some time to get used to other dogs.. and their behaviors. Remember he has to learn to read other dogs body language so he knows what tail up, or down, or arched back, or... etc means. He has to learn this. So always set him up to succeed in safe environments (don't just dump him at the dog park, take him to PUPPY classes at your local obedience club or equivalent) and then allow him to learn.

He'll come along, he's got a lot of learning to do. Enjoy your puppy.

Hes just a puppy!!!

At three months old, he still has a lot of exploring to do. Is this your first weim??

Typically too, males tend to be a bit more submissive than the females. I know my Jack is almost two and he is the biggest mama's boy... and I wouldn't have it any other way!
