I seen a Weimaraner one day when we were out.. I had no idea what the heck the breed was called. You should have seen my google searches trying to find out what the breed name was called. I think "Velvet dog" and "Silver dog" come to mind. When I FINALLY was put out of my misery I was in love. I would ring the most random people and ask if I could come and visit their Weim's.. they would think I was nuts but I bet they were secretly chuffed!
Finally after waiting 12 months my beautiful girl was born - oh by the way, I nagged and nagged Allan to get one.
When she first arrived I thought my heart was going to burst out of my chest. I was in love. |

I'll be lazy and repost with a few edits...
Our weim was a long time coming. I grew up on a large horse farm in a small town and we had more dogs than you can count because my mom would often take in misfits for us to foster. And there were always the ones you just "had" to keep. When I moved from home at 16 I had Zaphod with me and his been my shadow ever since. He was the perfect student dog with his laid back and quiet nature.
When I met my husband, eleven years ago, we found that we both had a interest in Weims. Every Weim we saw; we had to get to know. And luckily their owners always granted us time with our dogs. We were both still in university and he was living at home with his parents so a big dog was not an option. He is German and his family has always had German dogs - Schnauzers and Sheppys. When we were married and bought our own home, five years ago we knew we would eventually get another dog. Since Zaphod is getting older and has lost 5 of his 7 litter mates we started considering breeds hoping we would have some overlap. We both wanted a Weim but we wanted to make sure we were both committed. The breeds we discussed were non-shedding - Giant Schnauzer, Havanese and Soft Coated Wheaten and shedding - Weim, Great Dane, Boxer, Dobe. We went to dog shows and pet conferences and researched all the breeds and finally came back to Weims.
We then got ready for the long haul and new that it could be a year or more before we found a puppy. It was my first time purchasing a dog and from a breeder. We contacted many breeders and filled out the applications for 5 however many of them disappointed us. The one that interested us the most wasn't going to have puppies for at least a year but suggested we contact a breeder that his dog had sired the litter. After making contact, we went to watch Mom, Dad and family work in the field and brought along our families to meet them all. When the puppies were born we knew we were in and we put a deposit on a puppy.
The other day (I guess it's been months now), I was shocked to hear my husband ask "do you think we'll ever be a one dog household again?". We don't seem to remember life without our Weim and we've never laughed so much at our dogs.

| We knew we wanted a puppy and were ready for one. I started researching breeds and I knew I wanted a short haired large breed and when I read about this breed and how active and loyal they are I knew that's what I wanted. When I started looking at more into weims I saw how beautiful they were and was sold. The rest is history, and when he is super hyper some days I just remind myself you really wanted this dog lol. We really are crazy about him and I tell him he's the most spoiled puppy ever. |

I'm one of those who grew up with Weims. My dad brought our first one home in 1967. We got a second one a few years later. My dad hunted with them - pheasant and grouse. I was away at college when they passed.
Fast forward a few years and I am buying my first home and looking for a dog. A co-worker offered me a German Shepherd puppy and I took him. One of the best dogs in the world - lost him to degenerative myelopathy at 13. I also got a Norwegian Elkhound puppy as a gift. He was a good dog too. Lost him to congestive heart failure at 15.
I got married - and my husband kept talking about getting a hunting dog, maybe a Chesapeake bay retriever or Gordon setter. I started telling him about the Weims I grew up with and what excellent hunters they were. We met one one day while we were out and about and he was intrigued.
We got another German Shepherd - rescued from a shelter in Wilmington, NC and then we found a Weim for adoption in Va and were told by the shelter she was about a year old. We could tell when we saw her that she was much older than that but we had already made the trip so we took her home.
In 2005, I lost my beautiful German Shepherd to cancer. It was sudden too so I was not ready (are we ever?). Then my father-in-law died (cancer). Then our weim, Greta, was diagnosed with kidney failure and I lost my my mother to cancer. We hadn't had Greta for quite 2 years. We had already adopted Hans from a Cincinnatti rescue but we missed having that Weim around. So we applied for Mindy through an Arkansas rescue and when they found out I not only had big dog experience but WEIM experience, we were approved! |

I rescued a six-month old Rottweiler with the behavior patterns of grizzly bear on crystal meth. I needed to find a playmate for the beast before it ruined me....and the house! Went to the human society and saw some crossed-eyed, flop-eared bluish silver dog...the sign said it was one year old pure bred Weimaraner. My wife fell in love with it, but I in no way believe this thing was a Weim.
To make a short story long.....took the cross-eyed hideous beast home to play with the Rottweiller. Within three months, of a health diet and exercise, the girl put on thirty pounds and her eyes straightened out. She turned into the most beautiful blue weimaraner (in my humble opinion). She runs that Rottweiller ragged...and has become the best dog I have ever owned!
She treats me so well, it is almost as if she knows she was rescued and shows her appreciation....great dogs! |

I never thought I would actually have a "breed" dog. I have always and will still always rescue my animals. I don't have problems with reputable breeders, it's just that adopting fits me.
So last year, I adopted Sadie dog. She's rotty/chow mix. She's tops. I love her to death. We would do everything together! As soon as I got home she was in my truck and we were off. Well, she seemed to be getting lonely when I was at work and I didn't want her to feel bad. I searched and looked and tried out about 10 different dogs for compatibility with Sadie. She absolutely hated them all. I loved all of them but the point was to mix well with Sadie. So early this year I came across a family who was fined for not containing their dog and was told to fix the fence or get rid of it. Well, he decided to get rid of the dog. The dog was a Weim, full blood. I thought this might be my chance to adopt a Weim (which I have always thought were beautiful) and went to see this dog. The owner showed me Scooter and told me that he basically did nothing with the dog. I could tell that Scooter had an amazing personality but needed a lot of mental/emotional/physical grooming. I pondered the idea for many days and came to see Scooter several times. I finally decided to go with it and see if he was the dog for Sadie. I brought him home and they fell in love. She definitely approved. She was in love and I was in love. That was it...now he's happy, healthy, and loved to pieces!!
I have to say that I will most likely rescue a Weim later on in life. |
