As most of you probably know we adopted Jasmine back in August.
Well she had been heart worm positive and been treated while she was with Louisville Weim Rescue. Today was the day to get her rechecked... She is still heart worm positive, the vet said it barely showed, but still heart worm positive. He showed me the test kit, the positive indicator was bearly showing, but still I am so worried. He said continue the interceptor and bring her back in March to be retested.
He didn't seem real concerned since she had been treated recently, he said it may just take a bit more time for her test to come back negative & if she tests positive in March we will retreat her.
I wanted so bad for her to test heart worm negative, it breaks my heart to think that she may have to go through the whole process again. |

| I'm so sorry. I adopted Scooter in February of this year and he was heartworm positive. I was distraught and still to this day I have a hard time thinking about him having the worm and going through treatment. My vet said they did not want to retest him very soon after his treatment (talking like a few months) because it could still show positive. I would say to take a deep breath and know that you have already given her the treatment. She will be fine, after all a lot of heartworm tests come back positive even when there are no heartworms. It's one of the crazier tests. Just keep your chin up! |

| Praying for a negative test next time.....I'm sure she will be fine. It does take a while to get rid of them completely. |

I am sorry to hear that your Weim's heartworm test still shows positive, even though it is a weak positive, I am sure it is still stressful for you.
I was reading about heartworm treatment earlier this evening. One of our foster newer foster Weims showed positive when he was pulled from the shelter and will begin treatment soon. In part, the aftercare information states that in rare cases some patients can still test positive 4-6 months after treatment. It does not necessarily mean the dog still has heartworms and must go through treatment again, but it may be taking longer for the antigens to leave the dogs system...but the dog should continue to be monitored for the first full year and then yearly after that (as is done for all dogs). I think that it is very rare that the treatment would not have killed all the worms. |
