Our vet clinic combines the leptosporosis vaccine and the corona virus vaccines in a SEPARATE vaccine from your distemper, parvo, para influenza, pneumonia vaccine BECAUSE smaller dogs are at a risk for having a vaccine reaction to the lepto portion of the vaccine. The lepto/corona is good for a year.
The DHPP (the H is short for A2- para influenza) is given yearly because the para influenza part of that vaccine only lasts a year. You can get a 3 year vaccine (which I do for my dogs and our clinic highly suggests because the distemper/parvo lasts 3 years) but that Para influenza will not last those 3 years making it VERY important to stay on top of your bordetella vaccines. Bordetella (kennel cough) can put a strain on your dogs respiratory system making it suseptible to flu. Our vet gives Bordetella every 6 months.
So ANY dog that is going to be near creeks, standing water, the ocean, rivers, lakes, anything like that needs to have the lepto vaccine. In our area, just about every single dog gets it unless it's under 8lbs. |

Updates to come soon....But the short of it as of now
1. one of the cases turned out NOT to actually be lepto , according to the womans vet as well as 2nd tests done by A&M.
2. The 2nd case WAS lept but turns out to be a strain not covered by the 2-4 that are covered out of 8 so any vaccine wouldn't have helped anyways but on top of it there is suspicion of it being a 9th unknown strain.
I put the lept shots off....and am of course reconsidering back to my normal , don't over vacc, state of mind. |

But I don't know of too many humans who go around sniffing urine! We did have a hunter (human) in my area who died of it a few years back. He probably handled a critter who carried it. We have had numerous deaths of dogs in my area from Lepto.
Pfizer has a Lepto vaccine that is 4 strains. It also has the least amount of reactions to it. It must be given to the dog and then given again three weeks later.
I give my dogs the Lepto vaccine. If you hunt with your dog at all it is a MUST have vaccine IMHO and my vets'.
Hey how did you fare with Ike? I guess you have your power back or did you ever lose it? My inlaws are here from Beaumont. No power there yet. |
Does Pfizer state that its for dogs or is it considered off label use? Thats great news to know that there is a vaccine out there. |

| The vet offices around here just started carrying this vaccine for Leptospirosis..... I took Lucy in yesterday for her booster shots and the veterinarian gave me a pamphlet. He said that there were a couple of cases around here. It is optional around here right now. He said that some dogs have had a bad reaction to the vaccine. Ie. severe whelps, nausea, and vomiting... I made the decision to go ahead and get the vaccine for both of my girls. They seem to be doing great today. |

I'm glad they're doing good! Just know that reactions to vaccines can sometimes show themselves many days after the actual injection. Lincoln had a reaction exactly 2 weeks after his Rabies shot...just keep an eye on them for lethargy, hives, reverse sneezing etc....anything out of the ordinary and report to your vet right away! |
