So Icarus has had stink butt for a couple weeks now. At first we thought it was terrible gas but those of you experienced with it know that smell of putrid skunky tuna So after researching a bit we were certain it was the anal glands...yay. So I just got done squeezing his butt and gave him a bath. HOLY STINK! That was one of the most disgusting things I've had to do in my life! Ahh, the joys of having a dog. So my question is how do you know you got it all. I was trying to feel the glands and I couldn't feel them even before the squeeze. I mean "stuff" definitely came out and it was purely liquid form and soaked about a quarter size spot onto the paper towel. Is that normal? |

I hope you did it outside!!
I've never actually done it myself but I've watched my breeder do it to one of her dogs and it was definitely more than a quarter-sized wet spot. Ugh so gross just thinking about it.
You could always try again to see if you can get more, otherwise I'm sure it's fine.
The worst is when their breath starts stinking like fish and you know they've been licking their butt |

Watch this video. Basically you locate them (I couldn't feel them) take the tail in the left hand and a couple folded up paper towels with the right. Pinch the area push in, together, and up. I guess pressure like you're giving a deep tissue massage. Not to hard! But firm. It will squirt out into the towel. Yes it will STINK I know it's only been a couple days since I did it but it's made a difference. No more stinky pup! Thank god cause that smell gets right in your mouth. nasty. |

I think of it like popping a pimple. Be careful though, if you make a habit of it they can lose the ability to express them on their own. Generally the problem is runny feces, hard feces is what generally expresses them regularly, so if their poop isn't firm they can't express their own glands. If their poop IS regularly firm and this is a recurring problem, you might ask your vet about it.
There's an episode of Dirty Jobs on Discovery where Mike did this... his face was hilarious. |

Lesson learned: Do not avoid reading disgusting narratives at work while eating at desk, only to come to the weim addict site.
LMAO Salad and expressing anal glands: Not a good combo!!!! |

| OMG!!! I just gave Bailey a bath and managed to clean out his glands. It was so much and it shot out like 3 feet. I hope it helps his stink butt. |

| Kasper had to go to the vet for other reasons today so I had her express his anal glands which I've seen her do two other times. His butt was pointed straight at me so I moved so I didn't get sprayed. She started to express them and the fluid was dripping and shooting and all that. My vet says "Good thing you moved or it would have been all over your shoes." |

SHOULD there be some form of stinky fishy smell?? I mean if you can smell it does that mean they need to be emptied?? I have tried it twice now (funny how he squooshes his tail down with all his might)...and I get nothing back. I dont know if this is a normal smell and I should leave him alone or empty them out. I have just started noticing the fishy smell the past few days. |

We have had this done twice with Wyatt....at our vet.... they actually told us to bring him in because we could rupture the glands if not careful at home doing it. It is the most discusting thing ever!!!!
