I've been helping a friend look at grain free foods. These are the ones we can get close to us but feel free to mention others you like or if you like one brand's formula over another. She is leaning towards fish based grain frees.

I have to say that Wellness CORE is the first grain free I tried for Luna, but since it worked so well I didn't bother trying any other types!

I feed the original poultry-based kind, but the fish is definately on my list to give a try... someday. Right now besides ZERO ear infections and having her NOT paw at her face constantly I am enjoying firm regular poops, and a dog that doesn't have a stinky bum unless she gets into the cat food!!

I feed taste of the wild pacific formula because Zehen is allergic to everything but salmon and fish. I love it!

we use avoderm. I think it has brown rice in it...and maybe oatmeal but other than that i don't think anything else. it's super good for Cloud.

It looks like Wellness Core Ocean is the way she is leaning mainly because of the lower protein and higher fiber (34 Protein/14 Fat/7 Fibre). She wants to keep moderate levels for this first trial rather than overwhelming her girl's system from 24/16/4 to 44/18/2.5 (Orijen fish). She understands that these numbers are somewhat subjective and don't speak about bioavailability. On another note she has heard that some dogs act really hungry at first when they are weaned off a food with lots of fillers to something more condensed.

How much is Luna eating? Her girl is 75 pounds and eating about 1572 cals per day so she figures she'll get just under four cups? It's not cheap around here - 26 lb bag is $74.99. Shocked

We just switched to Wellness Core Ocean variety about 2 weeks ago. So far so good.

Wilson looks good and seems to feel great.

The lower protein is why I chose CORE over EVO.

Luna is a solid 60# and she eats 3 cups per day for a total of about 1290 calories. With this, she easily maintains her pretty little girlish figure, but I suspect we'll have to give her more during hunting season.

Well my friends dog is doing well on the WC Ocean and the transition went great. Her dogs allergic reactions seem to be lessened.

In doing the research with her and chatting with my breeder about grain free I decided to try it out for kicks. I bought the Original WC and we're five days into straight WC. I haven't noticed any real condition difference yet and he's eating the same amount as the old food (4 cups per day). We're having a mixed poop response - some firm; some soft but I guess it might be too soon to make claims. His deposits do seem to be smaller though.

Gotta love the poop talk Wink

poop talk.. Hooch has much smaller poops on wellness than he did on canidae.. but i mix the grain free with the super 5 mix.. is that why his poop is smaller? less grain? i thought he was absorbing more of the food.. so eliminating less..

Of the foods listed, which are grain free AND rice free? We use Orijen as a supplement to raw to put in treat balls, but we're seeing some itching, so I'm always looking for options. I prefer rice free for my itchy boy.

I also think it is the phenomenon of more absorption (greater metabolism) too but others might dispute it - just an observation I made.

I believe all of them are grain free including rice but two there only have one formula that is grain free - GO's Chicken, Turkey, Duck and Fromm's Surf and Turf.

Looks like Wellness is popular composing a 1/3 of the votes and those who are grain feeders are another 1/3.

The Wellness is still working for us although we weren't looking to correct any issues so it is harder to quantify. I haven't heard back from Orijen and it's been over a week and a half so that is negative in my books.

I got sent the link to some Wellness coupons:

I switched back to orijen from core, been using it for a month now with great results, definite difference in coat, shiny and soft as well as energy level.

My new bag of Grain Free Canidae (Salmon) is coming tomorrow! Very Happy

They STILL don't have it in my store, but I found a place online ( www.dogfooddirect.com ) that has VERY decent shipping rates.

The Canidae is the same cost as the CORE, but has 60+ more calories per cup, and comes in a 30# bag instead of just 26#. I got my samples of Taste of the Wild and was not impressed - it smelled funny and the kibbles were tiny...

I'll let you all know what I think of it when I get it I guess....
