I am in the process of trying to be a volunteer for the WRNT. Anyone on here from there? I put in an application to adopt then Haus fell from Heaven Laughing Now I can't adopt until he is neutered. I intend to get that taken care of as soon as his class is over. I am wondering though if it would not be better to foster. What do you all think?

You know what's a little strange is I was considering fostering and was told by the rescue in my area that they only let people WITHOUT dogs foster! I don't know how it is in other parts of the country but I really thought that was one of the stranger things I've ever heard of!

That is very strange. I've never heard that one. I can understand the neutering rule but to not have any dogs. How do they even know how you are with dogs? Confused

That is kind of weird. I foster for Louisville Weim Rescue and I have dogs and cats of my own. Personally I think it is better to have other animals in the home so you know how your foster acts around them and you can find them a perfect fit when the time comes. But what do I know? Smile

If I understand their rules I don't think you'll be able to foster either until Haus is fixed.

I had a hard time adopting even though I said I wanted the same sex dog.

IF a dog being surrendered is KNOWN to not be good w/ other dogs then I can see that being the case, but really from what I can see here and with my own rescue, WE NEED FOSTER HOMES and VOLUNTEERS.
I would apply for both to see what happens.

I think the Foster to adopt idea is great. Tri-State Weim Rescue does offer that option and it is actually the route I plan on taking once Im ready to get a second dog.

It is also a great option for someone who may be unsure of if they can handle 2 dogs or if their dog will be compatible with another dog. You are helping out but if its not a fit you are only fostering for a short term.

When they told me that I said "huh"? Are you serious? And she said as strange as that may sound that is their rules. I would think that those interested in fostering would usually have their own pet.

That is so odd! The only time owning a dog is an issue with Heartland is if the foster needs to be in an only dog home. That is rarely the case though. Most of my open fosters right now have dogs, kids, and cats. The cats is where we have the most issues. I have several open fosters right now but they all have cats, and all of the weims that are waiting on foster in that area didn't pass the "cat" test so to speak. All Rescues are always in need of fosters. I have been posting ads everywhere lately and we have been getting some great responses. Smile Craigslist does come in handy for that, not to mention flyers in your local petshops!

Have you had any luck helping? They appear to be full maybe they'll make an exception.

The goodbye is the hardest part and when the owner gives them to you. But after they are gone a few days, you just think of how much you helped your foster and keep in touch with the family that adopted them, that makes it so much easier. Sometimes they will even allow you to come see the Weim. My best piece of advice when it comes to fostering is don't be in a hurry to place them, take the time to find the right home for them and follow your gut. If you have a bad feeling then don't place them there. You have the last say in where your foster goes (at least with my rescue I do). There are so many Weims out there that need help and it would be great if you can help a Weim out. Smile

WRNT is a great group of folks. Mary Kay has one of Riley's pups.
Definitely foster. It's a good way to get introduced to the whole rescue thing.
