I searched this site for old posts, but there wasn't really much there. With some of the new members, including breeders on this site, I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with Puppy Strangles.
My breeder just told me she suspects Lincoln *might* have this as she noticed his lymph nodes were enlarged when she was puppy sitting him this past weekend. She was comparing them to his littermate's and definitely noticed a difference. Also Lincoln has had "puppy pimples" right from the day we brought him home (he's 5 months now) so we're wondering if that's not somehow related. She also threw Lymphosarcoma out there.
Lincoln got his Rabies shot about 2 weeks ago, as well.
Anyways, Lincoln seems to be doing okay, but he is definitely sleeping alot. Yesterday he was really only awake for about 2 hours total and today close to the same, which suggests that he feeling under the weather.
I'm going to take him to the vet tomorrow, and continue my research on the net, but just was wondering if anyone had any insight.
Thanks! |

| Puppy strangles isn't contagious which is good... steriods I believe are used to help manage it. They are immune compromised while they have strangles so be careful of where he goes. The one puppy i've know who had puppy strangles picked up demodex because of the strangles. I'd go to the vet ASAP if the breeder thinks he might have strangles. |

Puppy Strangles is an immune mediated issue. Usally it happenes to pups 8 weeks - 4 months though. They can get enlarged lymph nodes but many things can cause that too. Their eyes, muzzle, face usally swells and they get crusty skin all over their face (usually due to a secondary bacterial infection of the skin) demodex which is a normal inhabitant of the skin usally goes crazy and can take over too. He is a bit old in my books to have strangles. DID HE GO TO THE VET TODAY??? What wre their findings???
All the best for Lincoln, our thoughts are with him |

Yes, got him to the vet today. Vet looked him over and did notice the enlarged lymph nodes and puppy pimples as well as the other hive-like bumps he has but didn't think it was puppy strangles, although there is still a chance that's what it could be, but a VERY mild case. The typical treatment is steroids, and neither of us wanted to go that route so we're just going to wait and see.
He seemed so lethargic today, but I think a lot has to do with him sympathizing with me since I've been off work and laid out because I hurt my back. We took him to the dog park this afternoon and he was his old self!!
So, I think Lincoln's okay! Yay! |

What are puppy pimples? Where are they? And see the lymph nodes in her neck?
And I hope your Lincoln feels better soon.

| Scout had a pretty good case of puppy pimples a baby. I never thought anything of it...maybe there was a connection between that and the HOD since they are both related to auto immune defeicency. |

Puppy pimples are pretty much what they sound like, just like acne.
Lincoln gets it on his chin but also has had a few on his jowls and a couple above his nose. |

| it is very normal for puppies and adults to get the occasional pimple on their snout or chin but it should clear up on it's own. If they start to get out of hand than yes that is indicating their is an immune compromise somewhere so it's something to keep an eye on. So glad Lincoln is ok though. Our thoughts are with him! |

I'm glad it's not looking like strangles - that's great news.
As far as the pimples go, Slade had a couple when he was really little, and I found that switching him to ceramic bowls (non-porous) and wiping his mouth for him when he's done eating (saves your clothes too, LOL) cut down on food particles and bacteria hanging around, minimized unnecessary licking of his chops and took care of the problem. |

How old is Lincoln??
You may want to really keep an eye on this. He could be having a reaction to the Rabies vaccine. Is he sore in any of his front joints? Specifically his ankles? |

Lincoln was 5 months on September 9th, so I've been told he's a bit old for Puppy Strangles.
He did receive his Rabies vaccine on September 2nd, and I did think of that when he started not feeling well. I haven't noticed any soreness.
Today he woke up with a runny nose, eye goobers and he was sneezing. It's very strange because he's not *really* sick, but I just worry if these little symptoms are something bigger. I'll be home in a couple of hours to keep an eye on him.
Any thoughts? |
