Fur Kids: a nonfur kid named kadin. he was 9 in august. 2 domestic cats.. hotto is 12, kendall (AKA benz) is 6.. hooch macalli monster is our weim, born 11-11-07.. mostly known as "Hooch", the late Boo.. weim |

there is a very very rare occasion that we even think about leaving hooch for more than 3 hours. luckily with our work schedules, we have managed this plan since he came home in january.. i know a lot of you are able to/have to leave your babies for longer, and they all adjust well and are happy weimies.. someone once told me, beyond 45 minutes, they have no concept of time.. so 1 hr or 5 hrs makes no difference.. i find this hard to believe.. you?
i have just taken on a very part time day job one day a week now.. kade is getting braces, and hooch is getting older.. so i figured now is a pretty good time.
he still will not be left crated for more than 3-4 hours on that day, as cass will adjust her clients so she can be home by 12 to care for him, and kade and i will be home from school and work by 3:30..
today i have a family gathering 45 minutes away.. and cass won't come unless she comes down later and leaves earlier, to care for hooch macalli monster.. so, her showing up, most likely won't happen.. i am not concerned about him messing in his crate, as this is not an issue for him.. i just don't like him to be without one of us for too long. (which my family roll their eyes about, BTW.. and my friends, too)..
which leads me to my question..
if lynn and fam, or JL, or kel and chris lived closer in NJ, i suppose we would have an awesome weimy care back up going on.. which would be a priceless gift..
but.. if cass and i want to go somewhere together, and not worry about our time limit.. or if there was an emergency, i would like to have someone "for hire" that i trust would come, play with him for an hour, walk him, feed him, recrate him if need be, and he would be happy to see them, they could handle him with love, etc...
i can't think of one friend that could do this.. given his strength..
do i look into dog walkers? interview? cass can't even talk about it.. but i think this is a valid issue.. i would feel better if hooch had a back up buddy..
it's like trying to find childcare.. but a little worse. the baby might cry.. but hooch is strong!! something horrible could happen to him in the wrong hands..
help! |

I get the same reaction from people .. Doesn't matter to me what they think they are my babies and I don't trust one single person to take care of them the way we do .. We can leave them for quite some time if we need to do something that persists of long hours but I also have my mom who can come let them out for potty time if we are gone for a long time .. Hubby wants to vacation but I won't because I won't board my babies nor will I have someone come stay in my house w/them to dog sit .. Don't have advice to offer but wanted to wish you luck on your search .. |

Yeah I get that too. Brian and I try not to leave Bunker anymore than the time we are at work during the week. We either take him with us or one of us will stay home. The weekends we try to leave him no longer than 5 hours since he's penned up all week. When they start giving me crap I politely explain that I didn't buy a dog to keep him penned by himself all the time. It's not fair to the dog. Some of my pals crate there's while they are at work come home let them out to pee and then crate them all evening while they run around and wonder why they don't behave.
I have an 5am - 5pm event next month and will be taking him to my mom's to experiment and get him used to the place between now and then. I have no doubt that she will care for him as I wish, she loves him as much as I do, but worry he will be too strong for her as well... |

LOL This is going to sound ridiculous, but care.com AWESOME!!!!!!!!!
We not only found our kids babysitter there, LOL But Jack has a friend that comes and plays with him as needed when we know he's going to be left home for longer than he'd like (Jack is like a clock, he KNOWS when I should be walking in the door, so I dont believe that they have no concept of time).
Anyhow, Care.com offeres references, background checks, and really gives you a chance to thoroughly interview people. I highly recommend it. |

We are fortunate that my mom lives around the corner and can handle B n J. Our issue lies in if we all want to travel together to a place whre B n J can't go... like the Bahamas... Chris' mom used to watch them, but we dont talk anymore... plus she's about 2.5 hrs away.
We are less than 20 miles/about 35 min away, I think... if you EVER needed an emergency situation and Chris and I were available... you could call us. |

He should be able to hold himself in his crate for 6 hrs. with no problems. Just be sure to give him good exercise before you leave for work.
He'll probably sleep the whole time that you are gone. |

| As much as a PITA my dad can be thank god he's 5 mins from my house, and if we go away on vacation he can stay with the dogs. You could board him at at kennel for a day or is that out of the question? My back yard neighbor is also a dog walker, although we don't have a gate to her yard - she's convenient. OH and how come I'm not mentioned in "if they lived closer," huh? huh? |

| We take ours everywhere. When we go on Vacation I find us a house to rent on www.vrbo.com. There you can find homes that will allow dogs. Its a great web site. |

love you for that..
an emergency is an emergency.. i'll back any of you then..and make it work, too..just FYI..
this is luckily not an urgent situation.. we got it all worked out. he was crated for 4 hrs today.. which, like i said, is not his norm.. but he does fine..
i'm working on cass.. she is so stubborn.. so against a dog walker.. i have a friend that has 2 weims and helped out a lot when hooch came home.. i know she works like, 3 jobs, but i wonder if she might be around/know someone.. my neighbor that works nights, too is a cop.. he said he'd give it a go one day.. i just feel bad to impose on a neighbor.. i think i might ask my vet's tech, as well.. she is great with him.. but a bittie little thing..
i just feel like if someone is getting paid, they will pay more attention.. |

| This just made me realize how lucky I am. My younger brother is single, loves dogs and will stay at our house and spoil Mischa if we aren't home. He can also just stop by if we are going to be gone for the day. He lets her do whatever she wants and roughouses a bit too much, but she has fun and is safe, so I figure it is okay. Can you befriend any dog owners in your neighborhod? Maybe do a trade off, help them when they need it too? |

The time has come and now I'm a nervous weim mom. Our station sees the importance of going to viewings and funerals and doing the ceremonial firefighter salute/farewell stuff for the family. Awhile back at the request of the family we went a couple hours away and stood honor guard at the viewings and funeral of one of the founders of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial. The family had us invited to participate in the yearly ceremonies, which any firefighter can attend but they arranged it so our ladder truck was invited to hold the first of the American Flag archways into the grounds.
Here's the nervous part, we have to leave our station at 5am and won't be getting back until late in the evening. I'll have to be up super early to prep my uniform and get ready so Bunker is going to have to spend the night at my Mom's. Other than when he was neutered this will be his first night away from us. She's stoked at the chance to spoil her granddog all day and I'm nervous about his strength. 95% of the time he walks perfect with a flat collar but she's out in the boonies with a variety of furry animals he might want to chase. So I bought him a harness and worked this week to get him used to it. I've taken him over to her house a few times to see what needed put up on shelves to weim proof it. Planning a few walks and a trip to the dog park on Saturday to wear him out so hopefully everything goes well Sunday.... my cell phone will have to be turned off so I have a book written covering anything and everything... somehow I think if I had a kid I'd be a lot less nervous than I am about the dog that we treat like a kid. |

i understand.. it's so hard.. and with kids, they won't unintentionally hurt your mama with their strength! it's a whole different dimension with weims..
i'm sure they will be fine, and it is good for bunk to go.. easy to say, really hard to do.
we'll be thinking about you.. and having a no squirrel pray day! |
