Hi there! Welcome to the group. Your little guy is adorable. When we got Holly we weren't planning on getting a puppy just then either. I was taking my husband to see them because he had never seen a weim before and I had wanted one for 12 years. We bonded with her immediately and couldn't leave her there, funny how puppies do that to you.
As for the crate, the rule of thumb is 1 hour for every month old they are, so if he is 3 months old he should be okay in his crate for no more than 3 hours at a time. Is there anyone that could come let him out in the middle of the day for you? |

Unfortunately we don’t have anyone. I have been looking to possibly find someone that can stop by and take him out around 12:30 PM but I have not found anyone yet. He was in his crate for 7 hrs yesterday which made me ill to even think about leaving him alone, but he was ok when I got home. He is a lot more comfortable in the crate now and when we get home we wear him out as much as we can. We give him his favorite bone and his favorite toy when in the crate.
We spoke with a trainer yesterday and she said that it was fine leaving him in there since he likes the crate. Eventually, after a few months we will just let him be around the house. Yesterday we worked on the biting and the sit and lay command, he did considerably well. |

my wife and i both have schedules that all but prohibit us from getting home over lunch.
generally ours are locked up 8 hours a day.
when we get Riley on Saturday, she will spend 8 hours in the crate on Monday. We have a basement run for them, but until she is big enough that we feel safe, we will keep her seperate from Zoe in a crate - next to eachother, but seperate.
Anyway, the crate I will use is big enough that I can section off part as a sleeping area and part as a standing/peeing area. I know she wont be able to go all day without peeing, but I gotta pay the bills - dog food is pricey stuff. Once she is big enough to be with Z, I will have a spot in the run where she can pee.
The last month with Lola, she couldnt hold it all day, so she would just pee in the corner opposite their beds. When she was a pup we used the same system that I describe above - worked out just fine.
A physical seperation of flooring in the crate/run helped her seperate where she slept from where she would potty. That seemed to work in our case. |
