I was talking to a breeder over the weekend and she said that in her current litter there are 2 males with phantom colouring (like a dobe).
Is this possible? And if so does anyone have pictures? |

It's caused by the recessive 'at' gene. It means that both parents are carriers of the dobe markings. Weims were created by using hound blood which is why it's often called "the mark of the hound."

Wilson has this as well, never heard it referred to as phantom weim...that is kinda cool. We call it the "mark of the hound" and tell people it is "unusual, but not uncommon" and reference Riley

Neat! Thanks for the info. I have never heard of it called mark of the hound... I have seen the colouring in Standard Poodles and its called phantom.

Wow, I am learning so much on this site. Never seen a Weim with those markings. Have seen some with a white spot on the chest. The white Weim is also very neat.

I also have never seen a weim like this. It seems that here in the UK we have fewer genetic differences (few blues, no whites etc), it also appears (from my research) that people here are trying to import blue weims for breeding. I find this quite concerning as they can't be registered and I fear that it will lead to more dogs in rescue as these people are obviously only in it for the money!

There would definitely be dobe marked Weims in the UK. This has been described in the earliest German standards, it is not uncommon per se. Now Blues are a different story. And yes, I have seen breeders in the UK who have been exploiting Blues and selling them as "rare" and so on. I believe people in the US are more aware of the whole Blue thing since they have been around for a long time, but in other countries, they are starting to get exported from the US.

In the wonderful "Weimaraner Ways" book written by Jinny Alenaxder these marking are called Tan points and yes is a recessive trait that can pop up. They are exactly like doberman markings. Quite neat to see!!!
