I just enrolled Duke in the Pet Healthcare Plan available thru the AKC for accident coverage only. Does anyone know anything about them? How reliable they are for claims etc? I might only keep it for a couple of years, because he eats everything like rocks and he runs into everything too. We'll see if Gracie is as accident prone....

My pet insurance (Pets Best) has a $100,000 lifetime limit with a $7,000 per incident limit. They pay 80% after I pay the $75.00 deductible.

It sounds good on paper, I just wish I knew someone who has made a claim and what their experience was.

Hip dysplasia isn't covered in mine either.

This was interesting to read. Thanks for sharing!

I looked into pet insurance a while ago, and it seemed like there were so many exemptions that it wasn't worth it. I also read somewhere that you were better off taking the monthly fee and putting it into a savings account - which is what I did .. but it sounds like it might actually be more useful than I had thought.

Though even $20k doesn't seem like much.

We keep talking about buying pet insurance but just haven't gotten around to it yet. Really should for our new puppy (well 2yo), will have to do some research. I can say that when our rescue Aussie was diagnosed with his mass cell tumor, between radiation and chemo we spent a good 10k plus. I wish hip displaysia were covered but working with reputible breeders will help reduce that risk.

I signed Stanley up for health insurance through Banfield at PetsMart. http://www.banfield.net/ It runs $21.95 per month for a puupy. All vet visits are free, you get a discount off of any prescriptions, wormings are covered, all vaccinations and best of all it covered getting him neutered. When we neutered our first weim it was almost $400. On the plan when I neutered Stanley it only cost $20 and that was for pain meds.

We have Vet Insurance as well and love it. We have had numerous claims already (all minor bumps, scraps, excessive rummy tummy, wart on his pad that was bleeding) - and they have been fabulous. They pay quickly, if there are problems you can phone and get a live person. Paying the $28 month is the best thing I have ever done and it has already paid for itself 10 times over.
As someone else mentioned they don't over the initial exam or daily kennel fees, but no deductible.
You sign up on line and it is all very easy.

Shocked Shocked Shocked Good God, how many pair of balls did that dog have!!! I think it was 120 bucks to neuter Floyd and a good portion of that was cause I had to leave him there over night.

LOL!! Laughing

We had to pay the anesthesia by weight and he was over 45lbs. We've since changed vets.

Doing some math here -sorry Lynn, but your insurance and food bills make you my guinea pig...
Lynn forks over about $122 a month on insurance.
That's $1500 a year.
$70 a week on RAW and $75 a month on kibble = $3600 in raw and $900 in kibble = $4500

At $5,000 a year for food and insurance.
$50 deductible, lets assume that covers half of your average vet visit, and you go once a month - 3 times a year per dog for something, shots, eating crap, allergies, whatever. This is $50 a month in vet bills, $600 a year. And toys... just dropped money at Pet Edge did you not (I should have bought stock before I told you guys about the place). Say $200 a year on the low end. Add in other materials like leashes, bully sticks, treats, dog beds, etc - we can pull in a solid $1000 a year there.

At $6000 a year.
Over 27 months - $13,500.
This brings us back to my budget - $12,000 for 27 months. Knock out the last few months and we are back at $9,000 or less.
Lynn is dropping about $3,500 per dog per year.
I am probably at $4,500 per dog per year.
Perhaps there should be a tax credit for dogs too... Shocked

Yep, $20,000 might sound like a lump sum but ad up what goes in...it's a lot! There is more than that fee you paid to buy or adopt him!

Hmm, tax credit? I wonder if I can try to add him as a dependant huh? I mean...he IS our baby=)

Not to mention that dogs really make a hige impact on our economy...especially more now than ever as people buy clothes and much more and pay more for better food than ever before! ( hmm, even Paris Hiltin deserves a litle credit for jumping that up I guess=)

I wish we had gotten insurance! I was like many of you, checking the prices, what it covered, thinking it wasn't that great. Well, Lexi is only 10 months old and since January (mind you, that's only 3 months) we've spent over $6000 at the vet. That's probably what I've spent for Yukon's entire eight years of vet bills. You just never know. And trust me, when that vet comes out and tells you what it will cost to save your baby, you just sign the dotted line! We don't have that kind of money to spend, but we do it anyway. So lesson learned - get the pet insurance!
