I personally love it. It means that they love your dog too. I do it... (sorry?)
Whenever I see a dog, any dog... I do it. But I usually ask, or wait for the implied ok by them walking over... |

| Yeah - I got ya'. Maybe they don't know dog etiquette. For non-dog people, it means ' What a gorgeous dog!' |

I don't ever pet a strange dog either...you just never know when they might snap and I think it's pretty bold of strangers to walk up to my dog and pet without asking....not that I would mind, I just wouldn't think it were too smart ya know? I have found that MOST people ask if they are friendly first. No offense to anyone!!! And I've really noticed that when I take Duke for a walk people seem to be terrified of him! They cross the street and walk on the other side and stuff. I just laugh to myself. He's just a big lovable dopey puppy |

| In most cases, the bigger the dog, the better the personality. I wish people understood that. I have seen great danes more gentle than Chevy. |

I was at the mall recently and there was a disabled man in a wheelchair with a working dog at his side. I know that you arent supposed to pet or address the dog, but my daughter apparently either didnt or all thought went out the window when she saw the dog. Anyway, she went right over but instantly read the sign that says "working dont pet me" and backed up. We engaged the man in conversation about the dogs name, age, blah blah blah and he was kind enough to say go ahead pet her, she loves the attention. I was relieved and then soon became embarassed when he added "I often wonder if ANYONE would ever come and speak to me if I didnt have this dog beside me" Awwwwkwwaard. |

| I agree about the big dogs. I like big dogs much better! It's the little ones that I'm always leary of. |

Ha! I would have looked at him straight in the face and said "Probably not." I'd be joking of course.
I always ask before I pet someones dog, several times I've been told "No, he/she bites." or I'll get an unsure "Errr....alright. Be careful not to come up to quickly." LOL. Um, nevermind lady!!! |

Yea, the other day someone I know asked me what kind of dog I have and what kind of dog I am getting and I told them they are both weims and their response was "Oh, those are mean dogs huh?" I wanted to freakin smack them, it's like "Yes, they are viscous dogs, those are the type I prefer to be around my 4 year daughter, you freaking moron!!"
Some people, I swear. |

I have that happen quite frequently. Especially when in the dog park and in petsmart!!
Um, those are dog places! If you don't like dogs, not a great idea to go there....
Hemi is bigger, and what a love. He loves to give kisses, and is very gentle. |

I kind of want a Dane and think that might have been better for me, big and lazy.
Sophie is still driving me crazy. She was at daycare today and I enjoyed it a bit too much. I feel guilty. |

Same thing happens me too! I've been asked numerous times what kind of dog Danni is. Many haven't seen a blue weimaraner in my town...let alone a tall and slender dog. (She stands about 26" at the shoulders...)
I've had one lady run up to Danni and say "what a pretty girl" and Danni backed away. I told her to ask next time because Danni could've bitten her. Ohhhh man, she wasn't too pleased with me...LOL! Serves her right for assuming my pup was friendly!
Actually when anyone asks to pet her I let them know she's young and she could bite. She hasn't bitten anyone yet but she's a dog. Mostly this deters people away. The only exceptions are NAVHDA members who are insistent on petting her.
As far as other dogs go, I will not pet any that I don't know. Again the only exceptions are our NAVHDA or VSWC member's dogs. |
