|
|
Sky Blue likes to wake up in her crate at 3-4AM and we take her out to go potty and here is her routine. She is a 3 month old Weim.
1) open crate door
2) Sky stretches and walks slowly out of crate
3) we leash her and get our coat on
4) we try to get her to walk downstairs
5) she pees almost as soon as she leaves the crate before getting to the stairs
6) she goes outside and pees some more
How do I get her to wake up and go outside before peeing. We don't dilly dally or anything she just cant hold it.
Thanks

Welcome!
While potty training, I wouldn't worry about trying to get her to walk downstairs. If anything, I would carry her to make sure she gets out. Every accident in the house is a set back to training. I would also get myself ready before taking her out of the crate.
When I have young dogs, I leave their crate by the door so it's out of the crate and right outside. As you're sure she knows to wait for outside and she can hold it you can allow her to come downstairs on her own. |

| How long is she holding it before you let her out? At 3 months she can probably only hold it for 3 hours. Maybe you could try taking her out a little sooner, or pick her up and take her downstairs. Also, make sure you praise her when she goes outside, no matter what she did inside. |

You may not dilly dally, but by the time you leash her and get down the stairs she is simply unable to hold it. This will improve with age. We have a soft sided crate as well as a metal one. The soft side unzips from the top. We simply leaned down and leashed Taren. Saving a step and time. Also, when he was her age we just slept down stairs to facilitate the whole potty training situation, and again saving time. If you cannot sleep downstairs, can you crate her downstairs for now? To break the cycle you may just have to pick her up and carry her down the stairs until her bladder develops and she understands what you want of her. Have you considered getting her up before she is moving around or taking her out more often during the night? I know it is hard, but it is a very short period of training, and will save you problems in the end. Also, you can restrict (not deny) water consumption in the evening and that will help as well. Good luck! |

Yeah you have to be quick quick quick. And limit water at bed time.
Then when she's 10 months you have to get a boy puppy and name him Storm |

| 100% agree with carry her and make it fast! It should be wake up, grab and go and do not put her down until she is OUTSIDE. She can learn the rest later. |

Thanks everyone. Does anyone here have a Vizla? Would that be a good match for a Weim?
Thanks |

UPDATE:
This morning we noticed she didn't get up all night from 12-6. At 6 I told my girlfriend to try what you all mentioned by having everything ready and carrying Sky outside. My girlfriend picked up the dog and before they exited the room I hear "Ohh shes peeing on me!" My 3 month old puppy held it in her cage for 6 hours because she didn't want to pee on her fleece blanket but that was as long as she could. I think tonight we will set an alarm to get the dog up 1/2 way through the night and try the same carry technique. It was kind of funny in a sick way though. Any ideas?
Thanks

| Oh, I guess I could have warned you about that. Marley peed on us a lot while we carried her. I would wake up after about 3 hours and carry her out. I know it's a pain sometimes, but that comes with getting a puppy. Hang in there, it won't be long. |

keep her on like a 3 hour schedule right now and not focus on going all night, that's a long time for a pup that young to hold it. and i know she peed on you but carrying is the best method. Icarus wasn't going all the way through the night til like 5 or 6 months. Even then it was last water at 7ish then last pee break at 11ish. He still goes out at like 530am then back for a little more snoozing. He could probably hold it longer but i feel bad cause i know it can get uncomfortable trying to hold when you just want to sleep good luck! It will pass. |
