Hi all, its been forever since I've posted but our old girl has started peeing in her sleep. The vet says this isnt to uncommon in older females or dogs that have been spayed at any age. He gave me a choice of meds that should help. One is a form of plain estrogen and the other is called polyphenopropalamine. Has anyone had to deal with this and knows which is a better choice??? Let me know! Thanks in advance for all the info Wink

Isn't corn starch supposed to help with incontinence? I'm thinking I've read that in numerous places - maybe do a search.....possibly an herbal remedy to try prior to medicating her???? Just a thought..

Glad to see you around. Kisses to your baby!

I did find a holistic kindof treatment called Leaks No More (omg that is too funny), but could not find anything about cornstarch unless it involved fur....lol. I'll keep looking-thanks for the tip

My oldie was the same, what worked for her was Dene's Greenleaf tablets - mainly nettles.

Vet bed is apparently wonderful - all leaks go through to whatever's underneath it - towels etc, and the dog stays dry. I believe you can get it over there too. I'm about to buy a load for my current girl.

The problem is Carly is allowed on all of our furniture and I have literally had to wash every cushion cover we own as well as my sheets over and over.......i ordered the Leaks No More because all of the reviews are great. However, if we do have to go the medicinal route has anyone had a dog that was on either estrogen or the other that had side effects, Im just not sure which one would be the better route.

My female is almost 4 now,she has a urinary incontinence since she was about 1,5yrs old. The vet prescribed Prion,we give it to her before bed time in the evening.

Hi.
I have used Proin on my 9 year-old greyhound for several years and just recently used it on my Weim who started leaking right after she was spayed. What I found is that the vet grossly over-prescribed the dosage, so if you do try this drug, you might need to experiment with lowering the amount you give your pet. Restlessness is a side effect. I also found that after using it for a little while I could take the dogs off the meds and they stayed leak free! Good luck with whatever you do!

Thanks ev1, I will mention that to the vet....we have started a holistic herb thing for now and she was in a doggy diaper over the weekend (after the 5th accident on the couch or my bed-ugh) I thought she hated the elizabethan collar, that was nothing compared to the pitiful looks and tail tucking walk I get now.

Duchess is taking Proin for leakage too. For the first month I did not think it was working because she was still leaking, although maybe less. When I called our vet, she had me up the dose, and I don't think she has been doing it since.

She said she would prescribe the estrogen if the Proin did not work, but Proin had less side effects. Proin is basically dexatrim, but it does not cause weight loss in dogs.
