I was checking out the NorCal GSP rescue site, one of a few rescue sites that I follow and found this:
Copied from NorCalGSPRescue.com web site:
Dakota is a female white and black English Pointer at an Air Base shelter in South Korea. She is 18 months old and weighs 41 pounds. Dakota is current on vaccines, microchipped, heartworm negative and on heartworm preventative. Unfortunately many military personnel and their families acquire pets while stationed in South Korea and either relinquish or abandon them when they leave. Dakota was abandoned in January by an Army family south east of Seoul. Another Army man saw her running loose and took her in, but he gets sent out for field exercises and works long hours and he cannot give her the attention and exercise she needs. He has house trained her and taught her basic commands. She is a goofy playful girl who thinks she's a lap dog. The shelter has volunteers who take her out for exercise at 7am, 12 noon and 6:30pm. She has great public manners, too! Koreans do not have any real concept of humane type laws or concern for dogs and cats. They either treat them as an accessory or eat them. Korea is no place for her. It is packed and dirty with no place to really run her. Most military personnel live in high-rise type apartments or other multi-family housing units that may or may not have small yards. If you are interested in Dakota, please contact Danni Armstrong, Osan Animal Shelter Korea, osananimalshelter@gmail.com . Transport is available on June 22 from Seoul, Korea to San Francisco, CA.
OK, I don't do English Pointers, but I post on a board where a lot of folks are fans, the Pointing Dog Journal web site. So, I figure I'd re-post it to there, maybe someone could help out.
Within an hour, another board denizen posted:
<<I sent an email. I'll drive to Frisco (as much as I hate that place) and get her if need be. I don't know if I could keep her long-term, but I'm sure I could find a good situation for her.>>
The next AM, barely 12 hours later:
<<Here's a couple of pictures of the dog (including one that shows the fine soldier who pulled her off the mean streets of Seoul) from ChuckDC's EP rescue thread below. The American lady who runs that on-base shelter in Korea really has her act together all of the arrangements for bringing the dog here were completed before I went to bed last night, and I've already been in email contact with the lady who'll be escorting her on the flight. About the only thing left for me to do is draw up a placard with the escort's name so we can find each other at the S.F. airport a week from Sunday.
I know now that once I have this dog in my possession, I won't want to give her up. That's sort of a problem because we have four dogs right now and we're planning to breed Mazie, my setter, next time she comes into season, and I want to keep a male puppy. Five dogs is the maximum allowed in my town, but maybe I can convince the officials that the two Chihuahuas should only count as one dog. Anyway, it wouldn't be too difficult to hide one or both of the little ones if some sort inspector showed up.
Who knows, this girl (her name is Dakota, but I'll probably shorten it to Kota because I don't like three-syllable names) may not have a lick of birdiness in her. But the important thing is she's not going to end up in a crockpot over there in Southeast Asia.>>
The guy who is taking her, is someone that I met a weeks ago at a hunt test at Hastings Island Preserve, but didnt even know it at the time. The wheels are turning such that I may actually meet this dog one day.
Ok it's after the date of the flight... and I get an update...
<<Hey everybody,
My wife and I just got home a few hours ago from San Francisco, where we picked up the young pointer that was abandoned in Korea. Everything went as smoothly as possible, and the plane even arrived 20 minutes early.
We stopped by P&PGunsmith's place on the way home, enjoyed a very nice visit with his wife Julie and son Carl, and a fantastic barbecue lunch that included pheasant and antelope sausages. We also got our first glimpses of Kota's future (she was named Dakota in Korea, but I shortened it to two syllables).
It turns out the dog is considerably younger than first thought. When she was spayed on Thursday, the vet tabbed her at no more than nine months. There were no signs of her having had a heat cycle and her uterus was very small.
She's very confident and energetic and appears to have no psychological hangups whatsoever. She enjoyed romping around Pete's back yard with Dash, the mellowest of his trio of shorthairs. And on two occasions she opened a sliding screen door by herself to follow my wife inside. I mean opened it properly, just like a person would have.
Then it was back on the road to home to meet the ragged crew she'll be living with. This, I'll admit, has been a little chaotic, but nothing unexpected.
Mazie, my setter, seems to fear that I've brought home her replacement, and she won't leave my side. Zeke, my Lab, despite being confined to an extra-large crate while recovering from shoulder and knee surgery, is determined to show Kota who's the boss of the canine pack around here. For the time being, Kota stays away from his crate. The two Chihuahuas, for the most part, seem happy to have somebody new to play with.>>
Sorry I couldnt get the pics to post.. I'll figure that out. Anyway, this is a new record for me.. a roughly 10000 mile rescue I was able to help with |
