Hi, I'm from Australia where Orijen is a new kind of dry dog food. I'm a little worried about feeding it to my wei puppy due to it's high protein content. I've done a lot of reading in recent journals saying that protein % isn't as important as it was once thought and that a lot of growth problems are caused by calcium/phorphorus ratios.
I was just wondering if anyone on here has fed this food to their wei puppy from day one to over 12 months old and if they have had any bad effects from it.
Any other comments about the food are also be welcome. |

| It's a very very good food. I feed raw, but it would be one of the dry foods I would pick. You are right about the Ca:Phos being more important. |

| We have our puppy on Orijen Large Breed Puppy and we love it. He is so soft and shiny, he has no skin or tummy troubles and he LOVES dinner time so it's a win win for all of us. |

Hi I was just wondering how long you've been feeding it to your puppy? Have you been adding anything to it? |

hey there...
We have been feeding Orijen since he was 8 weeks old so it's been 9 weeks now that he's been on it. For the most part, it's just straight up kibble but now and then he goes through a phase where he likes to inhale his food so if I see that starting, I break a big fat carrot in half and toss the two pieces in the bowl. He has to go around it to get the food so it slows him down and then he'll nibble on the carrot for a while afterwards.
Now and then we give him some plain yogurt mixed in with his Orijen or pure pumpkin but other than after having a vaccination (which he's all done now) he never has problems with his poops and he's never had a problem with his ears so it's not an every day thing...just now and then.
One of the biggest things we've really noticed with the Orijen and others who have switched to it also say the same thing - the dogs seem so content and satisfied with it. Our neighbours dog eats and eats and begs for more constantly and then he poops and poops and poops all day but Django always seems so content. The odd time he'll even leave a bit in his bowl and then go back for it later. I know he likes the food because he gets very excited when he sees the bag and he dives right in but he eats, it stays with him, and he doesn't immediately crap it all back out. I know I'm not explaining this well, and perhaps a bit too graphically but I think you know what I'm trying to say.
For treats we give him carrots, green beans, little bits of cheese, and things like that but we have also found some really great grain free cookies, and training treats. We've even just found some really great teeth cleaning bones too without grains. If you're interested in any of that info, just let me know and I'll pass that along to you as well. |

We're on a different grain free food... but I would *LOVE* to know which grain free treats and such you found! |

I'm a very visual person so I've googled the items so you could see the bag etc...
These two we don't give very often, but here they are.
Here's the cookies. They are Natural Balance Duck & Potato.

Here's the bones. They are awesome for cleaning teeth. It's a challenge for us. Django is so good with us and the vet touching him and even though he doesn't bark or bite or anything that some dogs do, he makes it next to impossible to clean his teeth or trim his nails...so for us, these bones are a huge help. This company also has treats but we haven't tried them yet.

There is also a chicken treat that is just 100% freeze dried chicken and a venison treat but I cannot remember the brand name of either so when I get home, I'll look it up and post them as well. |

Sounds like you are really happy with it. This is a bit of a funny question but does your puppy's front legs go straight from toes to shoulder or does it bend back a bit at the middle joint between the toes and the shoulder. A friends has warned me that high protein diets in puppies cause them to bend at the pasterns or even cause their feet to bend slightly east/west. Do you have any recent photos of your pup straight on or from the side?
I'm a little worried about it happening with my puppy as it's one of the reason that dog food websites can't reccommend feeding orijen to a large breed puppy. |

Hey,
Since we got Benton we had him on Orijen large puppy breed and he seems to like it. He gets a little wind from time to time but I hope its normal.
I would definitely go with it , like yourself I did a lot of research and you get just overwhelmed with info. Orijen is a little bit more expensive but worth it. Benton has a good glossy coat.

Not a funny question at all, I had read something about that when we were researching foods. We have no issues with that. His legs are perfectly fine.
We researched a lot of different foods, spoke to a lot of different people who both liked and didn't like certain foods, asked their reasons, spoke to our vet, our breeder, and ultimately, this turned out to be the best food for us. Most of the foods that were recommended to us all had the same or a very close percentage of protein at about 42%. One other we were considering was Wellness Core at 34%. The lowest of the foods we were looking at was the Canidae all life stages at 24% which many told us was too low although many others gave it glowing reviews.
In the end, you will often find that many people who will endorse a food but then there will also be a great number of people who will not recommend it. I think that if you trust your vet and breeder's recommendations, and you know and keep a close eye on your dog, you'll know when you've found the right food for him/her and you'll also know if something isn't working for them. It's just like baby formula - you have to trust your doctor, use your best judgement and keep a watchful eye for signs of it not agreeing with their systems or growth. |

so funny how much research we all do to feed our pups.. a friend was in from italy and couldn't believe there were specialty dog food stores.
i am currently switching to wellness core from canidae's new gassy formula.. and keeping my fingers crossed. if it doesn't agree with hooch, then orijen is next on the list.. |
