I don't do NSTRA since your shooting skills come into play! Smile However I think Weims should do very well in this venue.

You don't traditionally see many weims doing NSTRA. But in theory they should do very well, especially one who hunts hard and methodically. We've thought about doing it a few times but then realize that our shooting skills are way sub-par! Very Happy

You should do it--and good luck!

I don't hunt NSTRA, but I do hunt local speed hunts. Basically the local is a two man team w/ 1 dog. There is a $150 entry fee. $50 for birds and $100 for the pot. You are given 6 shells. The shells can be split among the 2 however they see fit. 5 chukar are planted in a 3 acre field. Whoever uses the least shells and gets all 5 birds the fastest wins the pot. There has to be a definite point out of the dog. If the dog bumps up a bird, it can not be shot. If it ends up flying out of bounds, you can pretty well count your chances of winning gone. Once a bird is shot and the dog starts the retrieve, the team can not advance towards the dog. The dog doesn't have to retrieve to hand, but it must bring it back to within an arms reach of one of the team members. If a dog mangles a bird, it can not be counted. To do well in these competitions, you must be an excellent shot and you must have a dog that is fairly quick, relatively steady and a strong retriever. I have run my male Zeus several times and won twice. Also have ran my partners Gordon and won 3 times. The pot can sometimes get up around $3000, so it puts quite a bit of pressure on the teams to win.

I have several friends who run NSTRA. I don't do it for several reasons.

I'm not the greatest shot!

I also like a very steady, fully broke dog. Because of the fast pace and quickest retrieve rewarding of NSTRA it is very easy to make a dog not steady to shot. I HAVE to have a dog who is steady to shot because I sometimes guide hunts on a local shooting preserve. Many times the customers are not good shots and it can save a dog's life if they are steady!

Not many run NSTRA, an exception in the past was Dick Wilber in Texas.
What you need in NSTRA is ground speed and good nose to find the birds fast. Most finds usually wins unless your dog is a bad retriever.

I have pasted the Grau Geist dogs that ran in NSTRA. His dog Legs was the most successful having 12 pts. Note that this was in texas so he was running against lets say 30 pointers and setters and shorthairs. If you go to the link provided you can see for yourself Very Happy

I ran my weim as a puppy in NSTRA fun trials and he ended up second at the end of the year in the puppy class at the Green Valley Hunting and Retriever association. I like Cherrystone did not run NSTRA when red was older for I was running him in horseback fiedtrials in the AKC.

That's another reason why I like to keep my dog broke!

Did you just get a new pup from Judy?

Unfortunatley I am at my limit for bird dogs...my wife has imposed a 2 dog limit years ago, and I accidently went over that by one....with my daughters Weim. The only way I got her was because my daughter was given pick of the litter for free Shocked Very Happy I really would have liked one of Judy's pups, but my wife would have killed me Laughing

By the way, You can run your broke dogs in NSTRA, that is what Dick Wilbur did I believe. It just proves how broke his were. I supose you could run them and if they became unsteady steady them up again after the events. I have a friend who runs his setters in AKC, and he told me that he used to run NSTRA but could not win, his dogs did not find enough birds Shocked , so he switched to AKC horseback and finished most of his dogs in short order. NSTRA is really a good test for a bird dog. Not as tough as wild bird hunting but about as good as any other event I would say.

Thank you for the replies,

I am considering running after watching a 1/2 dozen braces, in some respects I think a Weim would do pretty good, such as a more methodical search for quail, I watched quite a few dogs run past birds although it was hot and very dry conditions. I can also see that the ultra smart Weims could do very well once they figure out the game.

First off I think I will go to a couple More trials and meet a few more people.
Thanks again.

Heck yeah she did a couple of nice ones, but you have time to convince your wife for one of the Tanner/Carly ones. Smile
