Give him lots of toys to nip on. I also had an old towel for ranger. He would nip on it for hours until he fell asleep. It's normal for puppies to do that. Just make sure to stop her from nipping on people. Have a toy handy always. Ranger is now 6 month and is hardly nipping anymore. But I know some dogs never really stops. It calms them down, which is a good thing!

A second for lots of toys. If he nips at you, so NO and give him something he can chew on. Weims are so easy to train he'll pick up on it quickly.

That's what I have been doing. I just want him to grow up and be a good dog. I have been doing alot of reading about how to train him. Anyone know of a good book for field training?

Welcome, I agree distract him with toys and say no in a firm voice. A good treat is a frozen Kong.

I would read Joan Bailey's book How to Help Gun Dogs Train Themselves That's a good place to start.
At this point and for your pup's first year I would just take him out and let him explore in the field. Let him be a puppy. NO real training at all. Just lots of exposure to different things.
As far as the nipping you can gently grab his muzzle and make him bite his own lip when he nips at you. At 6 weeks he actually should still be with his littermates. They would be teaching him that nipping is not appropriate behavior. Momma also teaches this. |
