New Weim owner (but experience dog owner)

Postby gcpoe » Fri Mar 12, 2010 10:09 am

Hi all! My husband and I recently acquired a now 8 week old Weim. We have a 9 month old Chocolate Lab, too. Our dog of 15 years, Cotton, was a rescue dog that I got when she was 5 weeks old and passed away from a tumor in her heart in January.

We made a decision to get Lexie (the lab) a new "sibling" after this happened and researched, waited and then got Allie (the Weim). They seems to being doing well together as they are both pretty "busy." So I thought this would be a good mix of breeds for a sibling arrangement. We have a large yard, spend a lot of time outdoors, and two older children (11 & 16). We felt the Weim was a good match for us as dog owners. Lexie is very needy, smart, and an incredible dog. She has a huge personality and you can't help but love her. I feel we did a good job socializing her at an early age and are following the same course with the new puppy, Allie. We do believe in crate training, however, Lexie is out of the crate all the time now and VERY well behaved. We hope for the same with Allie.

I do have a couple fo questions that I want an experienced Weim owner to answer but I will post them in the appropriate place.

So sorry for the loss of your Cotton. That must be hard, but your sweet youngsters will help with that. Looking forward to seeing pictures of Lexie and Allie.

Welcome! Weims are a bit differnet than labs, but they mix well together. I know a few people that have both. My brother has labs and they get along well with Isis. The funniest difference betweeen them is when we take them in the fields for a romp. I make Isis wear bright collars so what we can still see her because she blends in (at least in the fall/winter colors here in MI) and the black labs with a long wagging tail can always be seen. :lol:

Hello from Oklahoma and welcome to WA! Your babies sound like a good mix for each other! While weims are a bit different from labs, it sounds like you have things covered ;) I look forward to seeing pics of your babies... we love pictures :soppy:

:flower: Cotton :flower: ~ I'm so sorry for your loss. If you feel comfortable, you could post a little about Cotton in the "Land of golden trails & Wagging tails" section. I hope that your babies help make the passing a little easier {{{Hugs}}}

Welcome from another Atlanta weim owner. So sorry for your loss of Cotton but thrilled that you have two new youngsters.

We'd love to get you involved in the Chattahoochee Weimaraner Club. We have lots of fun activities, including hosting AKC hunt tests this weekend about an hour outside of Atlanta. If you have time, please stop by, meet lots of gray dogs and their owners, and watch some amazing dogs doing what they were born to do. You can find the club and info about the hunt test location on the web, or PM me for more info. I'll be at the test on Sunday for sure but possibly not on Saturday.
