New to Weims

Postby Liselle » Mon Feb 15, 2010 11:37 pm

Hello, I am a brand new Weim owner. We just got a 8 week almost 9 week male silver grey Wein who we have named Jasper. I have never had a dog before so this is all really new to me. I want to get him into training when he hits 12 weeks because I know what a stubborn breed the Weim's can be if not trained. I look forwar to hearing all the advice I can.

Hi Liselle!

Welcome from Australia!

I was a first-time dog and weim owner too. A lot of people thought I was jumping in too deep with my first dog being a weim, but I wouldn't have it any other way. My pup is 5 months old and can be a challenge at times, but I love him to bits because he has such a lovely personality. Hopefully you'll find Jasper is the same.

You'll find some great, knowledgable people on here. Enjoy your new pup!

Welcome Liselle & Jasper - from southeastern NC.
I've never had a puppy, because I adopt adult rescues. But I'm sure
the fun much outweighs the turmoil.
The folks on here are so knowledgeable & funny - they can help you
with about anything.

Hi from Indiana!

We've got a 5 month female, also our first weim and my first dog ever. This site is great for people like us! Searching old posts has become a staple for teaching me and helping me to see that no my dog is not insane, just a weim.

Training is great, I love it! On the "demon dog" days it helped me to see that yes she is learning and progressing so no I don't have to duct tape her in the corner just yet ;) I would make sure to use the commands you learn in everyday life, during play, feeding, downtime, etc, not just during school time. It really helps to reinforce it and makes them a bit more mannerly. That's pretty much all the advice I have, I'm a newbie after all like you!

Welcome!

My first pup ever was a Weim and well before the internet.
Seems like you are aware of the challenges. I'm a bit puppy-rusty,
but lots of new owners here going through similar things.
You'll find lots of advice scanning some existing threads.

Post some cute pics when you get a break from potty-training :D

Hi and welcome from Texas, I agree that you need a crate and you also need to read some of the old post.
I have a dog and sometimes I'll be the littlest kid with my dog and marvel at his ears and his nose and how he looks at me. If he died, I'd bawl like a baby.

Welcome! If you have a Petsmart in your area they start training at 10 weeks! I loved the class and so did Riley! When we go to Petsmart she makes an aline for the training room! Also you might want to look into Bell training for potty training it is a blessing!

Hello From Louisville Kentucky,

I am a brand new Weim owner as well. I got her when she was 8 weeks old and have had her now for 2 weeks. It's been great and I have enjoyed every minute of it. I am currently crate training her and she is just now getting the hang of it....I am also teaching her to ring a bell when she needs to go out...she picked up on that almost right away. They are VERY smart dogs!!! Good Luck!!! I have found this website to be very helpful!!!
