Hi, my name is Mule.
I have my first Weimaraner. I "inherited" him when he was 2.5 months old.
I am familiar with the "bully" type dogs. Chow, Rottweiler, and Pit bull. I now have 3 American Pit Bull Terriers on my yard.
This Weimaraner is a new game [and welcome] for me. He is 6 months old [born April 30, 2008] and with out a doubt the smartest and easiest dog I have ever taught anythang to, other than a German Sheppard I had, back in 1968-1974. I loved that dog.
I am becoming very attached to Jake.
Jake is a Continental Kennel Club [CKC] registered dog. Not that that makes any difference to him, he couldn't care less. But he came to me with CKC puppy papers, so I followed through and registered him as "Jake's Blue Ghost"
I have only had two other registered dogs in my life. They were both Chow Chow's.
The three pits love him, but I know that will change soon. I have already made the necessary changes to separate them By the way, I don't allow dogs, of any kind, in the house. He will live his entire life outside.

I think you should keep the mule out for a change and let the dogs have access to the house.

Welcome from East Texas, why are you keeping him outside? Weims are very social dogs, they like best to be with their human. Where is Redwater located at in Texas?

| Weimaraners really are not good outside dogs. They love to be with their people. |

| Ohhhh thank you guys, i did not want to say anything, last thing i want is to be known as an instigator, LOL. I have to agree though that weim are not outdoor kennel dogs, more like glued to your leg kind of dog.....LOL |

To All,
I don't want to get off on the wrong foot, but, I guess I have. I don't think any hunting dog is designed to be in the house. A Weimeraner, I believe, was [is] bred to be a hunting dog by nature. At least, that is what I read.
All the APBT owners seem to think the same way about pits also.
I am 62 years old and was raised to believe that dogs are on the yard to serve a purpose usually hunting, or, guarding for the other stock on the place. A dog kept in the house would not be of much use to me.
So, I guess, at this point, I am not welcome here.
I am sorry.
I don't have any knowledge to add to the forum, but I thought I might learn a little about the Weimaraner.
BTW...Redwater is in the Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana corner of Texas. |

You will learn plenty about your weimaraner here. Your post title says you are new to the breed. Weimaraners are very social "people" dogs. One of their most popular nicknames is "velcro dog". That is because they stick to their person like velcro.
If your particular dog is happy outside, and as long as they have plenty of shelter for bad weather, food and water and you make an effort to interact with them on a regular basis...he is probably o.k. Most of us choose to allow our dogs the run of our homes. I couldn't imagine having a dog and keeping it outside. It is a simple fact that they are not good outside dog...living outside dogs. They are wonderful hunting dogs.
You are certainly welcome here...everyone is.
I have a Jake, too. |

You are indeed welcome! You will find we all have strong opinions, but in the end we have the best interest of our dogs at heart. Stick around, you WILL learn a lot and make some friends in the process. I promise! Now how about some pictures of Jake. Oh, and what the heck, the other three as well. |

| Weims were bred to be excellent hunters AND companions. I really think it's your choice as to whether or not you let the dog in your home and do not think less of you if you don't. Hopefully you can give your Weim some attention and bonding time outside the home? These dogs usually don't do well if left outside and never get any attention. |

Welcome to the forum - we hope you stick around.
And welcome to Weimaraners! You obviously have had a lot of previous dogs and a lot of different breeds - I think you'll learn that a Weimaraner is very different than other breeds. They were originally bred to hunt, as you mentioned, but I did read somewhere that they were bred to sleep at their masters feet. It's definitely a defining characteristic of the breed, that they long to be with you.
If you need and want to keep him outside, that's okay as long as he's well cared for! |
