So Emma is our first Weimaraner. We also have a lab and chihuahua, so we're not completely clueless when it comes to dogs...especially puppies and training.

The problem we're having with Emma is that when ever she gets in her cage, she'll start to cry and then soon bark. When she tell her to stop, she'll just bark back. We've tried putting toys in there with her, but as soon as she's done playing, she'll start to cry again.

Emma is just over 4 months old. Our other boys cried too when we first got them, but by 4 months, they were comfortable with their cage. Does anyone having any advice? Is this a typical Weimaraner behavior?

We are also trying to work with her holding the need to pee through the night. Does this usually take awhile for Weimaraners? Thank you!

Very weim-like. Hemi would howl and howl... I just had to ignore him. Do not acknowledge her at all. When she stops, praise her. Have you tried one of your shirts or blankets with your smell... works for some. Can her crate be near you at night... Chevy did fine with that, as Hemi did too. If they could see me, they were fine.

As far as holding through the night... how long are we talking? Put her food/water up early and let her our right before bed.

Hello, my bailey will be 4 and still hates his crate Shocked He is only it when we go to work, fine at all other times. He goes in it no problem but we can hear him barking and crying all the way outside, and he is in the basement. I think it is just a weimaraner thing.

Good to know I'm not alone here! I placed a shirt in there over night and made sure she could see us and sure she cried a bit, but not nearly as much as she usually did. Thanks for the replies!

Crate training a weim takes a lot of time and patience!

Took us about 2.5 months before Jaeger was 100% comfortable (bark/whine free) being crated

Good luck!! and keep at it!

I'm sure others here will have good pointers for you Very Happy

We just had to get through the crying. All they want is to be with you so to a point there is nothing you can really do (short of freeing them) that will make them content. Takes time, patience, and cottonballs for your ears Very Happy You could make them kong treats, stuffed with peanut butter or something, a litte treat for the cage. Maybe have a special toy that is crate only but for us it was patience and time. However, if any of you have suggestions for dealing with a wife who cries and complains that her babies are whining and upset in the crate I am all ears.

The past couple of nights have been pretty nice...hopefully that will continue.
A new problem though is that she'll pee and not realize it. She was laying on the dog bed today with the lab and then got up and the lab soon got up. I looked over to see a big puddle in the middle of the bed where she was laying. I took her out and not more that 10 minutes later, as I was petting her, she peed. Is this just apart of growing up?
She had a lot to drink about an hour and a half ago, but I was sure to take her out like every 10 mins or so...which is another thing...she drinks a lot of water! I just feel bad for shooing her away and restricting water from the other two dogs....never realized life with a weim would be so interesting!

ps - oregonweim...u must have been heart broken sunday night after the bball game...GO COUGS! :p

My Gracie is 10 weeks old and completely crate trained in the 2 weeks that I've had her. She doesn't make a peep in there (unless she really has to go potty) so I don't think it's necessarily a Weim thing. My Duke (almost 6 months) was crate trained in the same amount of time (about a week). Neither one cry at all in the crate and often go in there on their own to sleep and were super easy to crate train.

Good for you Smile I guess I just have a difficult one. He goes in it no problem but hang it up after that. He goes as far as getting out sometimes and opening the basement door Shocked

My kids had no choice....when they were pups, I would put them in the crates and leave for work. Of course, I would hear them crying and whining as I left and it killed me. Especially Scout, because he was all alone as he was the first. But by the time I would get home they would be fine. It didn't take them long to realize that crate meant treats.

I think it is easier to crate train them if you'r not there to hear them cry.

Well I'm home almost all day and Gracie and Duke do not cry. They both did for about the first 2 days and that was it. Maybe I just got really really lucky?

I don't think it's luck and I agree it's not a Weim thing. Every one of my pups only cried for about 2 days and most people I know as well.

I thnk what happens is that if it isn't started the right way, then it can be hard to work through it.

Just stick it out and do not give in!

Some people sure are lucky!!! KD is in the crate/kennel while we are at work and it KILLS me to have to put her in there at night. She still has to go about 3 AM and me, being the dummy, takes her out and then I try to put her right back in until 5 AM when I get up and feed her before we go to work. She roams if she is left in the bedroom and she still takes a "nap" before bed even though I try to play with her and take her on a late walk, usually about 7-7:30 PM. Some people's kids!!!!
