Hello everyone, I recently switched Zeke off of Canidae and on to California Natural. He's been having loose stool (it's prety much soup!) for the past three days. I'm considering trying a different food but am wondering if I should give this one more time. How long should it take to adjust to a new food?

Thanks in advance!

When we switched Luna from Canidae to Wellness CORE, our vet said that it could take up to 3 months before we knew if it was working for sure...

I think it's been about 5 or 6 weeks now and I think everything is good to go with the switch.

Has it been only about 3 days since you made the switch? Is it possible it could be something else?

WOW!!! Up to three months with soupstool!!! When I originally switched him to Canidae from Kirkland he had SOFT stool for ~2 days. He never had this soupstool phenomenon.

If her tummy was upset, I would not personally have let it go that long though.... If Cal. Natural does not work itself out in a few weeks or so I would be worried too.

The last few food switches we went through prior to Canidae did not go well - it ended up with pudding poo, or a really stinky behind... at which point we ruled out red meat and lamb as far as protein sources. I now know that we need to go poultry-based for her to do well..

If the Kirkland works, why not switch back to that.... "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" Smile

Do you think it would be ok to switch straight from the CalNat Lamb to the CalNat Chicken? The only real difference seems to be the protein source. I really want to fix this. I can tell he's not comfortable. Runny stool and super-gassy. He's still his active/upbeat self though and eats readily so I'm 99% sure it's just the food switch.

Did you gradually ween the dog off the old food, or did you just switch cold turkey? My dogs need to be weened, or I wind up in your predicament. We are switching from ProPlan Sensitive Skin and Stomach to a venison based food. Pepper was doing fine on the ProPlan, but my Lab was getting ear infections. I'm trying to find a food that agrees with BOTH of them.

I am no expert, but if it is that bad what have you got to lose? If chicken worked before, it ought to work again! I'm pretty sure we just plain cut off a couple of foods that were REALLY not working...

Keep us posted!

If his stomach is really that upset I would go to bland chicken or lean ground beef and white rice for a few days and then reintroduce whatever food you decide. You can serve the bland food somewhat moist to add to his water uptake.

Good luck.

Poor Zeke and your poor yard....I have just switched my two dogs to a new food over about a 15 day transition..There was a little gas about 2 times but that was it..poos are fine...
You can add a spoonful of pumpkin to his food in hopes of firming up his poo...
Is he drinking good?...dehydration is what I would be concerned about....
Does his rear seem to be bothering him?

Hope this clears up soon for you and Zeke....

yeah.. if you didn't switch gradually, i would stop kibble all together and do boiled chicken, broth, rice, probiotics and a little honey or occasional oatmeal with a touch of applesauce until things firm up.. lots of fresh water and ice cubes..
then slowly add in the new kibble to that mix.. until it is more kibble than human food.. and see what happens.
unfortunately, we have had quite a few poo incidents around here.. he was on the homemade diet for almost a month one time, and 2 weeks another.. i'd just make big batches, separate them in containers in the fridge, and pray for solid poo..
good luck!

I just made the switch to a new food with Enzo and he is having some problems as well. When feeding the chicken and rice diet to settle things down, how much do you feed 'em and what ratio of chicken to rice?

Well, I hadn't noticed that his rear was bothering him until today. He started trying to poop and then began dragging his rear end on the grass. He's never done this before. A quick search pointed me twards worms. But he just went through a de-wormer about two weeks ago.

poor pups!! i would give hooch one and a half breast tenderloins to about a cup or so of rice, moistened with low sodium broth, a probiotic cap sprinkled on top, with a teaspoon of honey.. 3-4 times a day.. depending.. it would depend on the size/age/activity level of your pup, too..
1/4 to 1/2 cup real oatmeal with some unsweetened apple sauce would be a good choice, too for once a day..

Every dog is different, too, I know Bo and Greta can switch foods pretty much with minimal issues. They recover within a few days. However, they are used to being switched up as I don't keep them on one specific kibble constantly, I switch between different blends so they don't grow to accustom to one kibble. I know the update with Canidae didn't do Greta any favors so I switched her off that completely.
