Tomorrow is the day - I go to pick up our first Foster dog! I'm meeting a lady who is coming down from Northern Minnesota at a rest stop at 12:30!

I'm ALL nerves!

She's a 6-7 month old Weimaraner, and she's been in THREE homes already through no fault of her own... Sad I guess an eldery couple got her as a puppy and they couldn't handle having a large puppy, they turned her into a fat couch potato at 5 months old! The gal I'm meeting tomorrow is a manager at the animal shelter up there and though she was going to adopt her but realized she couldn't handle the pup, and 3 children in a 2 bedroom house by herself, so the dog was passed on to a third family (retired man and his wife) who loved her very much - I guess the guy was walking her like 10 miles every day and just adored her... Unfortunately he fell gravely ill just last week (cancer on top of heart problems) and his wife is unable to care for the dog and a very sick husband, so the dog went back to the shelter manager again... now she's coming to stay with us! She said she's an awesome dog - house trained, good with kids, other dogs and cats...

I'll keep you all posted - wish me luck!

For those who have already fostered, what can I expect? What can I do to prepare us?! Any tips or suggestions?

GOOD LUCK! GOOD LUCK! GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!

I'm probably not a good one to give you any advice right now, since I'm fostering for the first time (and it's not exactly "pleasant"). But it's still so new, so we can go through it together!!!

Try not to fall in love with her......if you can. Let Luna help you with her. Weims are the best teachers. Silkie and Scout raised Gunnar.

I agree, if you aren't going to keep her, try not to fall in love, that's how we have three. I am not a good at fostering I don't want to let them go once I have them. I am still grieving over the one we did let go, the people who have her love her and are always sending us pictures and telling us things that she does, but I miss her a lot.

I am going to try so hard... Luna is such a good girl, I hope she remembers her manners and can set a good example!

Is it mean to have the foster sleep in the crate or on the floor... our bed is NOT big enough for a 2nd dog, and I think that would only make it harder to not get attached...

Yes, yes she does! I can't believe you remember! Soppy / in love

I went and got her birthday presents today, she's getting a bad cuz, and a new nylabone and a tug o war rope to play with the foster!

Of course, I was going to make her a birthday post on here tomorrow... Wink

Thank you to everyone - I will keep you all posted with how things go (and pictures of course) after she comes home tomorrow!

Bun or cake Here's an early birthday bun for Miss Luna!!! She will have a playmate for her birthday.

When we first brought Silkie home, she stayed on the couch and Scout stayed out here with her. We were shocked. After a couple of nights they were both in bed with us.

I think if you put a bed in your room for her, she will be quite happy.

I would definitely keep the foster in a crate at night, rather than in your bed! It will only be harder--for her and for you--the more you bond with her. And letting her sleep in the bed with you will definitely help forge a bond! That's my two cents! Smile

The MWR site has great tips on introducing a foster into your home and how to manage it the first few days.
