Good grief, lots of larger dogs on this forum! 60 pounds for a female is petite? Don't talk to me or Meredith about that, I think our bitches are way under 60 pounds!
(Indy's smack in the middle of the standard at 24" and is less than 55 pounds.)

Athena's pushing the top of the standard and is 68 #'s. Breeding monster sized weims is just another example of how the show ring is effecting the breed. I went to a show in Springfield a year or 2 ago that had multiple weims pushing 30 inches and weren't DQ'd. I haven't seen but a couple of these supersized giants in the field, but have my doubts they could make it long.

I agree, I almost lost my teeth with the sizes I saw posted. Those are some big weims! My biggest female is at the tippy top of the height standard and is 63 lbs. Most of my other girls are about 23.5 - 24" and weight about 50 lbs. My males range from 25-27" and weigh between 65-75 lbs.

Yup, I have a purebred foster that was listed as 135.8 lbs on the paperwork when I picked him up last Saturday! I am going to get him on the scales soon to see for myself. His height is around 30" (I have trouble getting him to hold still standing up) and his chest is about 38" around. Take a look-
He is standing with my 60 lb, 6 month old puppy who will ALSO be huge.

Chowder is between 26 and 26.5 inches at the withers and about 100 lbs. Pure muscle and bone. Some think he needs to gain weight as you can see his backbone sometimes. The vet says he's the perfect weight for his size, he's just big. No problems hips or otherwise on him. He's just a big boy. I'm 5'7" and when he stands on his hind legs he is taller than eye level for me. He came from bigger boned hunters, some from Germany. all the boys in his line are big but the females are all around 25 in. and 60 lb. Pictures! Pictures! Very Happy

I think they made the standard for a reason... too big or too small and they aren't able to fulfill their work which is the whole reason of creating a breed standard. I know the East Coast (well, so I hear) has gigantic dogs. My weim is right in the middle at 26" and about 75 lbs and a great weight for his size/age (lots of bone). I hear he's not big enough to be truly competitive on the East Coast... so, I guess it's a good thing we are on the West! Smile

I think the idea that the AKC is ruining the breed is painting with a broad brush. I think it's more that some of the breeders are creating fads and what new judges learn off of are what they think is 'right'. The whole thing is opinions which is subjective. I don't think the system is corrupt, but I think breeds need to go back to the basics more.

Staying within standard is paramount to the breed and oversized/undersized happens, but they should not be bred.

Not saying they should be bred, but that big foster of mine was the most agile guy for his size. He climbed the stairs so easily and quietly that he snuck right past me in the basement while I was doing laundry and he could clear a 36" fence or be on your bed without even looking like he was jumping. He really surprised me with how graceful he was.

B&B I totally agree with you...
In australia, it is generally accepted that 1 inch over standard is ok... despite what it says in the standard...
Sure, if it's a great dog that is amazing in every way and is a little over standard, then i would consider using him/her... but you would go for a smaller dog/bitch to bring down that size back under standard. This isn't being done and perhaps the bigger, flashier dogs are winning because they stand out...
who knows...

Jake is the biggest boy I've seen in person. He is about 97 lbs right now. At his lightest he is about 93. According to his vet records he weighed 117 lbs at one time...way too heavy for him. Bit he is a big tall boy...about 29 or 30 inches at the whithers. I have another male, Gunnar, 3 years old and just about 95 lbs. He isn't fat at all, just a big muscular boy. Not as tall or long as Jake.

I don't know anything about any of Jake's relatives, but I have been in touch with a couple of Gunnar's siblings. Gunnar is a fluke. Neither his mom or dad was overly big, and the one male sibling of his that I know of, although not from the same litter but the same parents, only weighs about 70 lbs.

I'm so glad to hear that there are other little females out there. Indy is just on 50 lbs at 1 year old, and she's dwarfed by most of the other Weims we see at the beach. But as someone else said, don't dare tell her she's little! She out-wrestles her favourite weim friend, who is a 105 lb, 2 year old male. We call her the little gnat, cos she just keeps coming back and buzzing around him when he's completely exhausted of her.
