I hope I can get some answers here.
I have a 2 year old Weim, Female.
We are STILL working on "potty outside." She WILL NOT go in the crate which is good.
Dilemma: When we go outside (first thing in the AM, after eating, sleeping, before bedtime...) she is SO distracted with EVERYTHING around that she prefers to "play" rather than potty. I have had the training and tried it to a T but she is being very stubborn. The more I discipline and try to encourage potty outside, the more she fights me and wants to just lay down in the grass or not move at all when I pull the leash!
I hate to leave her in the crate all day but I have been putting her in there and coming home at lunch. Often she waits the ENTIRE day, until I return from work to potty.
Let me know your thoughts!
Does anyone have any advice. |

| Is she going in the house or just not going on command? |

Haus is the same way. He won't go in the house or in the crate, but he goes outside when he gets ready. He can hold it for hours and hours. I can't think of anything else you can do. Take her outside for a reasonable length of time, then crate her.

She is going inside the house if not in her crate. I don't think she'll ever go on command.
It sounds like crate or outside for her. Thanks for telling me about Haus.
Ally is going to dislike her mommy for some time. |

| Have you tried giving her a treats immediately after she goes to the bathroom outside? |

| Have you tried walking her whenever she won't go? If Mischa is goofing around and I am in a hurry, I just take her on a quick walk down our driveway to get her away from the fun in our backyard. We don't go back in until she pees and that way there aren't any accidents. |

I think out-waiting her is your key to getting the job done here, and possibly using a schedule.
Can you take any time off of work to try the whole thing over again? Do you normally play with her during her outside time and maybe she is mixing up going potty with play time?
If she keeps playing, I would come inside, bringing her with you and play in the house, watching closely until she got ready to squat in the house, immediately distract and take her outside repeating the process until she actually does her business outside and then give her treats and praise until you feel like a fool
Only problem with doing this is that it is going to take some dedicated time, I would guess much more than a weekend, but your end results might make your life a lot easier!
On a side note, I can keep telling Hannah to "go potty" before bed until she poops. I have never had a dog do that before and I have to say I love it...on the downside, I can't seem to get her to go potty in any other yard so her back teeth start to float when we go on a long trip! |

I have done the treats and walking. For some reason, treats have not been sufficient for potty; everything else they work great! Walking has not worked because she's too busy hunting for birds, squirrels, rabbits, frogs. You name it. Although, all exercise is greatly appreciated.
Based on what some of you say, I may have to be diligent in timing & treats. I could take off from work but I hope after going back & forth to her crate for a couple of days now she will soon get the message. I KNOW SHE'S SMARTER THAN THIS.
Thanks again. |

I would go right back to puppy rules with her for a while. If she's not in her crate in her house, she's tethered to you. Watch her like a hawk. If she looks like she's going to go, bring her outside quickly. If she poops or pees out there praise her like she's done the best thing in the world and treat her. If she eliminates in the house while on the tether it's because you aren't watching her close enough. Yes it'll be a pain for a while but so is cleaning up after her.
Good luck! |
