Well, Milo is really injured this time. But we don't know how he injured himself. Sunday night, he went swimming for about 25 minutes and then a quick 5 minute run back to the truck. I didn't see anything wrong with him. My husband said he saw Milo limping slightly later that night but I didn't see anything. Then, Monday morning, when I let him out of his kennel, his left front paw was completely limp. He kept trying to use it and it would just fold under him. I kennel rested him all day yesterday and called the vet first thing this morning. He rested all day today until it was time to see the vet.
Turns out, he has a brachial plexus avulsion. Apparently all of a dog's nerves run through their armpit area. Milo has injured or torn those nerves somehow. He has no feeling through most of that leg. He does have some feeling deep in the muscle, but nothing on the skin. And he has some feeling in part of his paw. One of the signs of brachial plexis avulsion is something called Horner's Syndrome. Milo has this too as evidenced by his right eye being able to dilate but his left eye will not. For now, he got a big shot of steroids, and our vet is calling Texas A&M. We'll be going to the veterinary school there to see a neurologist as soon as we can get an appointment. The prognosis is really not good for this injury. He may never get full use of that leg back.
Needless to say, we are very sad and worried tonight. This is a wait and see situation and the waiting is very hard. We appreciate any extra thoughts & prayers you can spare.
