I bought some canned green tripe, but I have not opened it yet. I read it was really good for them, but I don't even know what it is! Is it meat? (Something disgusting, huh??) Is it stinky? I bet my dogs won't TOUCH the stuff and I'll have to throw it out!

| Banshee13, LOL, YES it is very disgusting and it smells terrible, bur your dogs will love it! I was just telling my hubby last night that i need to buy some of those face masks to handle green tripe when feeding it to Rocky. Its just the lining of the prays stomach. I have a question though, where did you buy it canned? I am having some freezer space issues so this would be good. |

from www.greentripe.com
Tripe is the stomach of ruminating animals. These animals (i.e. cattle, buffalo, sheep, deer, goats, antelope, etc.) are classified as being four-footed, hooved, cud chewing mamals with a stomach that consists of four chambers. The four chambers of such a stomach are known as the rumen, reticulum, omasum and the abomasum. The food the animal eats (i.e. grass, hay) is swallowed unchewed and passes into the rumen and reticulum where it is then regurgitated, chewed and mixed with saliva. It is again swallowed and then passed through the reticulum and omasum into the abomasum, where it is then further broken down by the gastric juices, amino acids and other digestive enzymes. Yummy! |

I'm fairly certain I got it at Pet Valu in White Oak, where I buy their kibble. If not there, then it was at Mighty Healthy Pet, which is the new pet food annex of My Organic Market (MoM) in College Park. The brand is Tripett and they have a website, www.tripett.com Good luck!

| Very interesting info everyone/...but yet another question...I often feed cooked food mixed with kibble...not much in thew way of raw BUT...in what form do each of you feed these meats as well as if they are cooked how are they cooked ( how the heck do you feed the turkey necks and some of that stuff? AND then how much a day do they eat this stuff? When I look up feeding I keep finding a measured amount for the "people food" but then always says " mixed with kibble" type stuff but not sure the balance and measurements of the "people food" and kibble etc. Ok..I know, a lot and yes, I am also researching at the same time in other ways. |

| I feed everything raw. Turkey necks and chicken necks raw. They crunch them down and they are good at keeping their teeth clean. |

| I as well feed all raw, but Rocky gets it ground coarse (meat+bones+organs). Since my space is limited and i don't want him dragging around a piece of turkey neck and slapping it on the carpet to chew, LOL! Rocky eats 3lbs a day and this is based on the fact that he is still a puppy and puppies need about 4-5% of their body weight in raw food. Once he reaches adulthood it will probably go down to about 2-3% depending on his activity level. The good thing with raw is that you can pretty much look at your dog and tell if they need more or less food. Generally though, Rocky has days that he looks a bit fuller and he decided that he does not want to eat the whole 3lbs, and there are days that he has been running around a lot and he just has a growth spur and he sits there waiting for more food, even after he has had his 3lbs for the day. I give him however much he wants to eat bc he is just pretty good about stopping when he is full. I know there are some out there that will disagree with this, but its worked well for us and i don`t stress it! |

No, not at all, its not a stupid question. I actually get it not from a butcher but from smo that works for the biggest meat and seafood co. for commercial use here in the DC area. The guy has to Doberman and he basically buys the meat from the his company and grinds it up. He does 80% meat and 20% bone and he wraps them up in 5lb rolls and sells them that way. It is a lot cheaper for me than buying commercial raw such as Nature`s Variety. Rocky eats 3 lbs a day and the commercial raw got very expensive, $25 every two days!
I also buy organs from him, he takes liver, heart, and kidney and he grinds them up as well, coarse. I generally take out of the freezer on 5lb roll ever couple of days and i add my supplement and some of the organ mix.
Its very convenient for us to give it to ROCKY ground bc when we first started on raw i would give him a chicken wing and he would take it around the apartment and try to eat it. Its labor intensive for a puppy so it would take him a while as well. I was concerned about the bacteria also and i could just not get him to stay there on top of his food bowl trying to eat a while piece of chicken with bones. This way i get everything ground up and i make one lb patties myself and keep them refrigerated till its time to take out the new 5 lb rolls. Generally, once i add the organs and the veggies to the 5 lb of meat that comes in a roll it ends up being pretty close to 6lbs (3 lbs each day). He also gets fish twice a week and that is by far his favorite, i think my dog might be a bear! |

| I like the ground idea because Wrench takes his food and eats it on the chair, couch, carpet, rug etc if it's a kind of something to drag around=) It also sounds cleaner and safer and really easy...I like the roll idea too and then just adding his veggies to it, etc. Also I am not find of feeding bones....but ground up sounds good and safe. Thanks! |
