Rosko jumps in the LuvSac and just lays down when it's time. Takes me a bit because I strategically place a bright LED flashlight so it shines through the nails while I clip. I've hit the quick a few times, once really bad and it bled for an hour, but he still lets me do it fine.
The problem is it's such a stressful process for me as I do not want to hurt him and I fear any quick hit could make him hate it from then on.
The more you trim them (and closer to the quick you get) the shorter you can make them (meaning less trimming later on).
I've been trying to do the Dremel thing for a bit, but they are kinda pricey for just using on the dogs nails and the actual 'Dremel' brand seems to break an awful lot. But, using a rotary tool is the bomb because you can 'round' them smooth on all sides of the quick forcing it back even further. Awesome. I have to get one... maybe this week. |

oh my, what is the LuvSac? Sounds cozy!
My dogs are all drama queens about their nails. I dremel half the time and clip them half the time. They grow faster than lightning and we have nail night every monday--it is truly an event with three dogs. The pup just decided if she squirms enough I have to let her go so I have to try not to let her win and get it over with quickly. I would kill for dogs that lay there and let me have my way! |

Wish I could say that my dogs nails are always like this but when they go on the road and are not maintained they get much longer and it takes a long time to get them back.
I use a dremel and go as far down to the quick as possible. As Rosko said the quick will start to recede and you will be able to get them shorter each time. |

| How long does it take for the quick to recede? Darby's nails look awful, but I can't cut them any shorter because of the quick. |

Someone out there needs to create and open a dog nail emporium!!...where you go in and they give your dog a spa treatment for paws...HA HA HA! Quick soak in the bubbles with the paws, a bit of dremeling, a oil rub, and a quick paint for the female weims...(only said that because my goofy cousin used to paint her two great dane females nails all the time)
We bought a cheap cordless dremel tool kit and all the excessories (came with a wand like you see at those nail places for humans, resembles a pencil like wand) at Harbor Freight tools. It was a woppin 19.99 so far it has lasted almost a year. They have a website I think...

I think it depends on the dog to be honest. I hate to say it but with my dogs, once they get a bit out of control it takes almost a YEAR to get them back!!
If you dremel rather than cut, you can get closer to the quick and the closer to the quick you get the more it recedes.... |

| I dremel Bo's claws, but will also clip them first if I need to. I find it really useful to give her a bully stick while I do it, this keeps her really still and also she associates nail care with her favourite thing in the world and is more than willing to lay and let mummy clip and sand for as long as it takes. |

It's definitely quicker with the dremel. I've was able to pare Thor's claws back from
to less than:
in about 2 months (of taking a little more off about once a week). He still could do to be shorter, for my liking, but he's almost where I want him now.
Slade, I've just stayed on top of since day one, so it's never been an issue. Thor's got that bad because he won't tolerate the clippers, and the bf had never even heard of trying a dremel until I did it. |

| Where can you buy a dremel or dremel like tool? I have read about them on a lot of different places on here but don't know anything about purchasing one. I try to take Julia and Lucy once a month to Kennelwood and have them clipped and filed, but I would rather do it on my own. |

| You can buy a dremmel at Home Depot, Loews or any hardware store. They sell ones specifically for pets at Pets Mart, but they were more expensive than the dremmel. |

OK, I finally got some pictures of the length I keep Slade`s nails.
The last one was taken within a few minutes of a dremel session, so you can really see what the finish is when you`re done. It actually looks a lot rougher than it is because it`s so close up, but you can always buff with a fine human nail file too. |

OMG!!!! Those are the best weim nails EVER!!!! I'm so proud of you. Funny if you even look in the weim standard it says under the feet heading "nails short" I just ha faye's teeth cleaned under anesthetic and I took the opportunity to cut them right back. she now has the tiniest nubbins ever. You sure have done a great job with Slade. he doesn't mind the dremel obviously!!! |

He doesn`t LOVE it, per se, but he doesn`t mind too much. I just talk to him the whole time I`m doing it, and he gets tons of praise when he`s all done. It`s so funny, he bounces around with his tail going a mile a minute like "I did good! Did you see? I did good! Now where's my treat - gimme gimme gimme!".
He gets better and better each time though. He pretty well just lays there and lets me do it now. Mind you, I've been doing it about once a week since he came home at 8 weeks, so that helps. |
