I work in a pet store in Sugar Land and we had a customer yesterday that gave me the name of two vets who have had recent Lepto cases in the area...her dog included, the other resulting in death of the dog.

She told me it transfers through urin and that her own dog got it from the duck pond and duck urin. The other dog don't know. It's a human and dog disease?

Any info? Also anyone know of a Dr. Hunt and a Dr. Hockey in the new territoy -ish area's because thats where it has been apparently and I am trying to find info as well as am scheduleing Wrench for a lepto shot.

Yes Lepto is a VERY deadly disease. It is carried in the urine of raccoons, coyotes, fox, etc. ANd yes it can affect both humans and dogs. But I don't know of too many humans who go around sniffing urine! We did have a hunter (human) in my area who died of it a few years back. He probably handled a critter who carried it. We have had numerous deaths of dogs in my area from Lepto.

Pfizer has a Lepto vaccine that is 4 strains. It also has the least amount of reactions to it. It must be given to the dog and then given again three weeks later.

I give my dogs the Lepto vaccine. If you hunt with your dog at all it is a MUST have vaccine IMHO and my vets'.

Hey how did you fare with Ike? I guess you have your power back or did you ever lose it? My inlaws are here from Beaumont. No power there yet.

Lepto is the "L" part of the DTTLP vax. It has many strains, though and not all are covered by the shot.
Junie got it 2 springs ago and spent 3 days in the hosp! It's very dangerous if not caught and treated and then you really need to be diligent w/ keeping other dogs away from the urine.

This vaccine only has two strains of Lepto. and has a higher risk of reaction to the vaccine than the Pfizer. The Pfizer vaccine is a newer vaccine has had very few reactions to it so far.

Wrench hasn't had the lepto and no vets I have called so far, including any I have ever seen and my own current one ...they say they haven't seen a case in like 20 years. He's getting it now though because he's around ducks a lot.

There are lots of old posts on lepto and they go both ways - vaccinate and don't vaccinate.

We decided it was important for us. There is a high incidence in our area, we live off of a conservation area and we are working in the field. Our vet also used the Pfizer Vanguard vaccine. She asked if there was any family history of vaccine reactions (there is not) and we chose to do it separately 6 weeks away from the other vaccines so we could monitor any reaction. He didn't even get tired afterwards so we are glad we did it.

All of my other breeds have also had the vaccination with their standard vaccinations so until I had a Weim I wasn't aware there was a greater reaction to it. Although my vet says the strong reactions are generally less than 1%.

Is it ok to do the Lepto and the Bordotello at the same time? due to where I work I am breaking down and vaccinating Wrench to all this. I know nothing with the rabies but what about those two things?

I recently asked my vet about Lepto vaccine. She infromed me that here in Louisiana, Lepto vaccine is part of the yearly shot due to high risk in our area. She said it's common around areas of water and livestock too.

:Sad Wave: That'd be my family. Coming up on about a year ago, in late October.

I'm completely paranoid during the Spring and Fall Seasons (that's when it's prevelant in Colorado)... so my dogs are only going for city walks and places where there isn't heavily wooded/forested areas.

It's an incredibly nasty disease. Our vet heard about 10 cases last year at the place where our family dog died (a specific creek). It was a fast and painful death, and we made the choice to finally put him down after a week of trying nearly everything. He was only 1 year old, poor little boy.

Edit: I should also add that he had the vaccine...but when the vet checked his antibody levels, there were none present. So he either caught the 'bad' Lepto (all of it is bad and horrible) that wasn't covered in the vaccine, or the exposure period was not long enough (he was due for a revaccination in November).

While it's true we, humans, don't usually get into the source of the Lepto, you can catch it from your dog. So many times the sick dog will be vomiting, diarrhea, and urinating in the house if they can't make it outside....and you'll most likely be cleaning it up. If you come into contact with the infected dog's urine, then there may be a chance that you could come down with it as well. Although if you wear gloves and are careful with methodical handwashing, it's less of a chance of contagion for humans.

Lepto should be given every six months. The vaccine only lasts about 6-8 months. The vaccine also doesn't cover all strains.

Heres a good article about it.

That article is no longer valid. There is a Pfizer vaccine that is good for 4 strains. You give the first dose and then revaccinate 3 weeks later. You do NOT have to vaccinate every 6 mos.
