Have fun with your new puppy...yes, the housebreaking is the hard part, but it should only last for a few months. Watch him like a hawk! I was so relieved when Gracie was housebroken...I waited until I was absolutely sure she would have no more accidents and then had my carpets cleaned! What a thrill! Good luck with your pup and keep taking lots of pictures! |

Congrats on your new puppy! He is adorable, but I think that he may need a few more toys. LOL.
Regarding house training....As others have told you, bring him out after eating, playing, sleeping, etc. Sure sign of a poop is a pucker butt and turning around in a circle.
One thing that I have done in the past to house break a puppy is to put a bell on the door. Train him to ring it as he goes out...
Also, give him a command that tells him he needs to go out to do potty. Whatever works for you, but be consistent. When he does do his business outside give him lots of praise.
Good luck! Jackie |

Here's a new picture from today's walk - I noticed he did much better on the leash tonight after spending some time this afternoon with it tied to my beltloop!
I also realized that there is no way we are getting any new furniture in the next few months!

So that's what it's called! |

| A couple of months to potty train? Wow that seems long! My dogs were totally and I mean TOTALLY potty trained in 10 days or less. I have a doggy door. I was shocked at how quickly they were trained. I think Duke was 10 days exactly and Gracie more like 7 days and neither one of them have EVER had an accident in the house since. I did crate train though and if I could not watch their every move they were in their crate. I think that was the key to our success. And it's true that every accident sets you back. Make sure you clean each accident with some type of urine cleaner too so they can't smell it. Even though you can't smell it they can and will keep going back to the same spot. I blocked off each and every spot they ever went in until they were completely trained. Just a few tips! I wish you luck!! (Now mind you just as I got Duke fully trained along came Gracie and I had to start all over again!!!) |

I think part of the problem I am having is that it is hard to keep an eye on him 100% of the time. The leash tip helped, and I notice that if I hear a silence (no tag jingling) that I need to look quickly!! The other thing that may be a problem is that he has to go down a fairly steep flight of stairs to get to the door - he's not crazy about stairs. I brought him home on Monday and he has gotten a lot better over the past couple of days - sometimes he goes down pretty easily on his own, other times he needs some encouragement. I may take the runner off the stairs for a while in case that's what's freaking him out... The bell sounds like a good idea, maybe if I put that at the top of the stairs.
He's had zero accidents in his crate though, so I am happy about that! |

Welcome from Nebraska! He is just a hansome little boy! Hope you enjoy the puppy stage, it does not last too long, and before you know it, you have a 65 plus pound little man on your hands!

Thank you for all the welcomes!! This is a great board and we are already getting some fantastic tips (and support)! Raising a puppy is a LOT of work and it can be exhausting sometimes. It's good to get reminders that he's just a normal puppy.
It's hard to believe that he will grow that fast!! But then he already looks bigger than he did a week ago... |

Extreme weather.....this was probably our worse year for tornadoes this close to Lincoln....other then that its pretty ordinary...Its one of the many places that you can get all four seasons anytime of the year! We have thundersnow sometimes in October, we have rain and 80 degree weather one day, and the next we could have 55 degrees outside and sunshine...
So glad you joined the board!

I think in the first picture they look a little extra large because of the perspective - but he does get regular comments on his big feet when we are out and about! |

Thank you! We are doing better with the potty training - I moved the crate to the base of the stairs and close to the exit door. Today we only had one half of an accident (he started to pee and I ran him outside)!! And tonight when we were watching a movie (and he was limited to the living room area) he started acting like a spaz, waited until I looked at him, and then did his circle and poop stance - as soon as I said "No! Outside!" he ran down the steps and went outside to poop. I was soo proud of him!!! |
