Does anyone feed joint supplements? I was thinking about it since we are now competing in agility. Scout is 4 and just beginning agility and I want to protect her joints so she can compete as long as possible. I feed her Solid Gold Wolf King which contains Omega 3 and Omega 6. Her body weight is good (she is not fat) and the dogs in her line have been OFA good or excellent. Should I worry? Any suggestions?

Glucosamine and chondroitin are great for joint care, and as long as she isn't allergic to shellfish, then it won't hurt to give her these supplements, even if she may not need it.

But what they do is protect against the things you see in older dogs. Even a OFA good or excellent dog may develop arthritis or some cartilage damage as they get older. These supplements help with these things and also have some mild pain relieving properties as well. So they are good for joint "maintenance".

I am giving Riley Dasuquin with MSM and Adequan shots for his fractured toe, the fracture is not the issue, it's that the fracture occurred at the joint and the joint is now arthiritic. Dasuqin and Adequan are both prescription but are nutriceuticals, with all the goodies, MSM, chondroitin, etc. I am hopeful that they will help his toe issue as I want him up and about this fall for hunting. So far, so good, but I haven't pushed him too much yet.

Thanks everyone. I will look into these. Yes, it is arthritis I am worried about. I am hoping to prolong her career but more importantly I want to make sure she feels as good as possible as she gets older!

Kasper takes Cosequin DS chewable tablets. I hear that they are good for large dogs that can sometimes grow too fast...my vet recommended it. He has some tightness in his right shoulder.
