Norman is 1.5 yrs and has basic obedience pretty well mastered. He has been introduced to the field and instinct has taken over. Anybody have any suggestions for readings or training programs that i could implement in Normans conquest to hunt pheasants?
thanks

I started entering Scout in akc hunt tests around the age of 1.5 years. Now a year later he has his Junior Hunter. And he has had very minimal exposure to birds, about 3 times in a year. The junior level is great as its more of a test of natural ability than anything else.

Are your plans to achieve titles or perhaps for a personal hunting dog? If its a personal hunting dog you're after I would see if there are any hunting clubs in your area. They'd surely know of some good trainers. You could also join your local weimaraner club(if you don't already belong) and I'm sure there are people who hunt their dogs too. So that would be a great resource.

I have a book that I have really enjoyed reading & use a lot called Urban Gun Dogs by Anthony Roettger. I like because it gives you ideas about how to train with limited time and space, and I think it is pretty well written in terms of both usability & readability.

Glad to hear you've found some good materials and references.

One thing I try and remember though is that Weims are not like your typical gun dog. They can not take the same kind of corrections as a GSP or Pointer, so when I read books, I keep that in mind, that I have to tone it down a bit for my guys.

I don't think there are any Weim specific training books or videos out there, but I really like anything by Delmar Smith. He seems to really understand a way to train a gun dog in a postive manner.

Good Luck and Happy Hunting too!!!
