Call me an over concerned Mom, my 6 month puppy ate the end of a rawhide bone. Should I be concerned? I went to bed while she was chewing on it. Woke up and heard her breathng shallowly. She seems fine other than breathing shallowly, which sometimes she does. Should I be concerned? Anyone up tonight.

I would be concerned. Rawhides aren't good for dogs because of that reason. These silly dogs are always doing something to worry us. Rolling Eyes

If she's acting differently at all I'd take her into the Vet. I don't mean to worry you more but I've heard of bad things happening because of Rawhide bones.

She is not really acting different, just the shallow breathing and weird snoring. I'm usually a very heavy sleeper, so I'm not sure if it is normal. I'll make her get up and walk around, so I can observe her.

what do u mean the end of a rawhide bone?

Grace used to get the rawhides stuck in her throat when she tried to swallow them..id open her mouth up and see it down there and have to reach in and pull it out. So not sure if thats what you mean...open her jaws up and peer down her throat...see if its lodged. Grace hasnt had rawhide in years bc of that.

I would take her in.

Last time Chevy did that, she was vomiting blood, and had a blockage. It did pass in a few days, but it was still very scary.

Get her in. Do you have an emergency vet near by?

I have to get to bed but please keep us posted.

And remember trust your instincts, if something doesn't seem right it's best to have her checked out.

God, doesn't it always happen after hours!!!!
Holly puked 20 times the other night. I'm not sure why, I think it was all of the grass she ate. But we almost had to go to the ER. I stayed up with her half the night and then she slept in our bed. I woke up in the morning, bolted out of bed and grabbed her up!!! I had a horrible dream about her. She was like "WTF mom! Get off of me and let me go back to sleep!!"

I got her up and we played ball for sometime. Then she decided to try to eat the stuffing out of one of her plush toys! She's a handful! She seems to be fine. She has been snoozing next to me without the loud shallow breathing. Now listening to her I think she is fine, but I think she really was in trouble earlier when she was breathing so irregularly. I plan to watch her carefully and take her in if she shows any indication of a problem. Thanks for your advice. I know where there is a pet ER ~20 minutes away. Hopefully she tore it apart in small pieces rather than one big one. I'll keep a watch on her poo as usual.

I'm going to try to get some sleep. She'll be waking me in four hours for her morning walk. Smile

So much for getting to bed.. Laughing

I had to see how she was doing. I'm glad to hear the shallow breathing stopped. Def. keep an eye out for any blockages. They are very serious and every minute counts. Hopefully she did break it to pieces.

She seemed her normal wild self this morning. Normal poo. My husband teaches at a University and is off on summer break. He'll watch her carefully today. I think I overreacted. Thanks for the advice. Embarassed

I don't think you overreacted either. They are like children; we get accustomed to their mannerisms and behaviours, and if something is different, there is usually something wrong...or at least out of the ordinary.

I don't like rawhide bones for the very same reason. My friend has two pugs and one night her male woke her up in the middle of the night, which was very unusual for him. They always slept through the night and were very quiet until the morning. He became increasingly aggitated so she knew something had to be wrong. She got up and he ran. She followed him and he led her right to the female pug who was choking and not getting any air at all. They had to perform somewhat of a doggie version of the J thrust and eventually they cleared the airway and out popped a piece of rawhide that had perfectly covered her esophagus. He saved his sister...how cute is that?

I'm so glad to hear that she's doing okay.

She seems to be fine Very Happy . We are throwing away all of the raw hide bones with the knots on the end. Eventually we'll through away the straight ones. The problem is that she needs something to chew on. What do you guys give your dogs instead? She works the kong over, but the raw hide is her favorite.

I'm happy she is doing well.

I'm not a fan of rawhide so I give my guys real marrow bones. I can buy 3-4 for about $1-2 at the grocery store butcher. And if there is heavy bone left when the marrow is gone I boil them well (to kill everything) and line them with peanut butter to encourage more chewing. Just be aware that marrow is fatty so if you dog isn't use to it is can cause the runs. You can scoop out some marrow or limit the time spent chewing the bone. My MIL bakes them first - 400 for one hour covered - and that melts away some of the fat too.
